What makes me crackers about this is that the use of evergreen trees around the Winter Solstice go back long before Christianity. I think of the Christmas tree as more of a cultural tradition, brought here by the Hessians. A Jewish friend of mine's mother is German by heritage, and they always had a tree (to the mortification of my friend's father, who would keep the curtains closed all through December so the neighbors wouldn't see).
I can see objecting to a creche, but a Christmas tree? There isn't any religious significance to the tree. Sigh...
