Babel

Just got back from seeing it, I try to see most of the Academy Award nominees before the show...It is a really good movie but difficult to watch. Not so much depressing, as stomach churning. I wouldn't say the different threads in the movie are seamless, but they are compelling enough to get past that....The performace by the Japanese girl and the Mexican nanny are top notch and deserving of nominations. The movie buffs like Nicole would like this. If anyone else has seen it and cares to chime in, please do so. Randall

i am very much out of the movie loop. what's this one about?

randallscott35 02-03-2007 02:56 PM

Hard to Explain. Here's a snippet review.

In the remote sands of the Moroccan desert, a rifle shot rings out -- detonating a chain of events that will link an American tourist couple's frantic struggle to survive, two Moroccan boys involved in an accidental crime, a nanny illegally crossing into Mexico with two American children and a Japanese teen rebel whose father is sought by the police in Tokyo.

mmmkay...so i take it, it's not a comedy??;)

No, very serious....Compare it to a movie like 21 Grams or Crash. Lots of things going on....Worth seeing, but hard to watch. I get affected by tough movies like that.

Yes it is a very good movie. I especially enjoyed the way that the stories were all linked, but they did not make the connections ridiculous.
The various plots were all realistically interwoven and did not overly rely on coincidence to push along the plot. That, along with solid acting performances made it a good movie.
My two favorites from this year however, are still Little Miss Sunshine and Little Children.

I want to see Little Children, but a family member yesterday said it was horrible. The reviews were all pretty good.

I really liked the movie and you are right on regarding the performances of the Mexican lady and the Japanese girl... really all the foreign actors were very, very good... definately a movie to watch...

Did you see Apocolypto?? that was very good too!

Rinko deserves the Supp. Actress award. I hope she upsets them tomorrow.

This movie is better than 21 Grams.
