Dominguez takes five

Look, I know the guy has been the subject of some, er...controversy...on this site lately, but fair is fair -- you gotta' give the guy some props.

And they weren't all favorites.

Shadow, I agree at times he's one of the best in the country, but that ride last week or so that BTW pointed out was disgusting. I remember seeing him as an up and comer at Hialeah in '96 when he 1st arrived to the U.S.. His incident with Afleet Alex in the Preakness will never be forgotten. He's 30 yrs of age and the future is still bright.

See him often at Delaware. I have to admit that the incident in the Preakness kind of disturbed me at the time. I thought it odd -- can't say it was poor judgment, exactly -- for Dominguez to go to the left hand at that particular time. Ultimately, I just put it down to Scrappy T overreacting, like Dominguez said. And, he still came in second.

Bogey my friend.....he is far from one of the best in the country....he spots himself in the right places...Del....Lrl/Pim...The inner dirt meet at AQU......and he gets the mounts because the better jockeys aren't around....this guy burns a ton of money....if Eddie MArtin was riding for Contessa/Dutrows he would have just as many wins in NY....watch him when the real jocks come back up north...he goes back and hides at Delaware...where he belongs....

I have never seen a jock like Ramon who seems to not try that much out there...its like when he wins a race he wants to win by a neck...no matter how much horse he has

Stone, I mentioned at times, his ride in the '04 BC Turf was outstanding. There is a reason why Graham and others choose him to ride their top stock. I agree he is not there on a consistent basis with the best, but he still has some upside and could be successful for a long time.

I hear ya.....its just tough to bet him at times because there isnt good value ....and he is my "Pat Day"...bet on him...he loses....bet against him and he beats you....

I kind of had the same problem with Patient Pat.

Agree and disagree here. Can't agree that he doesn't try that much. Ramon is a little on the taller side and just looks awkward on a horse especially in the stretch where his sweeping whipping kind of takes away from a vigorous hand movement of say Gomez. I do think he likes not to over use a horse and you see him sometimes not ride as hard for a 3rd or 4th as he would if he were in contention to conserve the horse and that does bug me about him. I get to see him on an almost daily basis and agree that he does but on some bad rides including that one last week god lord i dont even wanna talk about it but if he is hot and riding well he times his rides really nicely like today on cavallo pazzo. I think his Saratoga meet 2 years back wasn't too bad at all where he won 20 wins and had a nice little ROI on those if I'm not mistaken. I can't fault you for thinking like you are but I just don't have the same view on the way he rides. Plus I cashed on at least 10 of those 20 at Saratoga 2 years back with him on board which always helps:D

Go watch a replay of his ride on Daytime Promise at AQU ...Jan 11...3rd race.

Definetly one of the worst rides I have ever seen.

I refered to it in my post I know the ride and I agreed it was absoluely pitiful. I really don't want to have another 7 page thread on it either.

Hilarious...the guy gets 5 wins out of 8, and it's still "yeah, BUT..."

He's one of the best out there & nobody tries harder. One of these days he'll get the respect he deserves. Maybe he'll just have to stay & beat up on the regular colony...what'll the excuse be then??

The guy in your Avatar looks like he takes 5 too.

He had a great day. Good for him, he deserves it after the sh1tstorm he endured over the Daytime Promise ride last week. Not that it wasn't deserved.

This is what I know about RD based on personal experience

1. He gets the top mounts practically every race.

2. He's ridden for me twice and is a very pleasant, well meaning, hard working jock. I have no problem at all with him or his character, and do not hold any grudges toward him. In fact, he's welcome on any of my mounts in NY.

3. If there is anything critical that I would mention it would be that it seems to find WAY too much trouble for the horses he gets. Not every race, not even the majority of races. But there's definately a noticeable pattern.
The Daytime Promise ride has been beaten into the ground, but is indicative of his riding style.

4. When the inner meet is history and he heads back to the Mid-Atl, many of the jocks that race here daily will face Prado, Gomez, et. al. when they migrate back to NY for the spring. RD will continue to succeed on his home court, and the Eddie Martin's, Channing Hill's and the rest will have to find some one else to bellyache about....

He is one of the best ...when he rides in less than stellar colonies and gets the good mounts...dominating Delaware and winning a lot of races on the inner at AQU is ok......basically any half decent jock could be just as successful IF they got spoon fed the top horses/favorites....watch what happens when he goes up to Saratoga.....does nothing.....

Stay and beat up on the regular colony? Surely you are kidding...guys like Prado...Velazquez...Velasquez...Bejarano...Castell ano....are much better than Dominguez and it shows...watch what happens when they come back up north...he will go hiding back At Delaware where he can win all those 5k claiming races....I am sure he isnt stupid enough to try and stick around....he never does...

It's horse racing friend not jockey racing. When he rode at Saratoga full time 2 years ago his mounts weren't nearly as live as any of Edgar or Johhny's and therefore just didn't have the stock to compete with those guys. You put Ramon on Edgar's horses and he definetly would not have had as many wins but he sure would have been up near the top of the standings. The reason he goes to Delaware is because of the stock he has down there where he can ride the top horses 70 percent of the races. I wouldn't be suprised though if he stayed after the inner meet as he was going to last year but made a late decision to go back to Delaware.

Yeah right. He leaves because he's not in the top echelon of jockeys. The guy refuses to pay his dues and would rather take the easy money (Delaware)

Can't say I blame him though.

For some reason people on here have this image that he is a lazy bum who doesn't wanna pay his dues and doesn't ride hard. As evidenced by a poster who he has rode for twice in an above post he stated he was a nice hard-working guy. You have no idea what your talking about and obviously did not read the articles after the inner last year statng why he was going back to Delaware. I still would not be suprised to see him stay this year.

For some reason you want to put words in my mouth. I didn't say he was lazy. I'm sure he's a nice, hard-working guy but that doesn't change the face he cuts and runs when the big dogs come home to claim their turf.

I don't need to read the articles to know that he went to Delaware for the easy money. He probably said something about family...the typical line when someone is taking the easy way out.

Fair enough. I don't view it as cutting and running but I see your argument and can't blame ya.
