I sometimes hear people say that certain bets are "sucker" bets. Usually they are talking about Pick 6s which I agree are almost impossible, but looking at the results from last weekend, I'm not sure that the Super Hi-5 should be included as a sucker bet. 3 of our players had 5 out of 5 of the top finishers in the feature race which makes me think with a bit of luck and creative bet construction some of you guys could have collected the $2600 plus that the bet paid.

It was kind of interesting to see that many of us left last year's Derby winner off of our top 5 altogether. I believe he was ranked 4th in the ML, behind Locked, White Abarrio and Saudi Crown. I had thought that Skippy deserved to be a lot less than 10-1 in the ML, but the #1 was kind of tough to come up with for a super or Hi-5 ticket.

I sometimes participate in the Twin Spires daily contests, some of which have horizontal bets but more are of the vertical variety. In the verticals, my most difficult task is trying to figure out whom to include for 4th or 5th place in instances when you must make your pick "cold" and can't spread over several possible runners the way you are able to when wagering.

They gave the Derby winner a lot of respect, but the Derby didn't seem to be one of the faster ones so I didn't like him. I think he benefited from a rail skimming ride from a rider that might have been paying attention when Calvin Borel used such tactics to win a few Derbies. As for the one horse, I thought he deserved to be in the mix because of his big race at Santa Anita. The horse that I had the most trouble including was Saudi Crown based on his Breeder's Cup races in which he was beaten badly at both a mile and a mile and a quarter and also, his two best races at a mile and an eighth were both wet track efforts so didn't know whether that would translate to a fast track. Probably that last is a bit of over handicapping on my part.

A daunting task arraying a ticket for a Pick 5. I had all 5 horses but a $1 wager would have cost $120. Since I only had White Abarrio no better than second in any of my cappings and thought Mixto, Locked or Skippylongstocking had a better chance to win I would have been doomed from the start. It ain't easy .

We are talking about a Super High 5 not a Pick 5, and it would be difficult for either wager, but there are far fewer combinations for a SH5 than a Pick5, and you are right that a 5 horse box would be $120, but you would not be required to play a box and as I said before some creative bet construction could be done for far less. What is easy? I guess that betting small fields like I did is a bit easier, but even that can go awry.
