Thank goodness the first batch of heavy showers went somewhere else. I think that more rain may occur after 5 but by then most of the turf races except the Diana will be in the books. This time of year you can never count out a thunderstorm rolling out of the Adirondacks when you least expect it.

PURRRHAPS AT MONMOUTH PARK ;)

Some were, 20,983 to be exact. Very good attendance for Monmouth's signature race of the year. NJ Route 36 between the track and the Garden State Parkway must have been a zoo. Unfortunately, the Haskell was marred by an unfortunate incident near the 1/8th pole in which the favorite, Hot Rod Charlie, came in about two lanes while Mandaloun was making a move near the rail. That left Midnight Bourbon no place to go, and he appeared to clip heels with Charlie, almost went down, tossing Paco Lopez who then was kicked by Following Sea and stayed on the ground until he was removed by stretcher. Everything happened so quickly that I may not have gotten the sequence correct except to say it was a scary situation.

The reports I read stated that Lopez was "suffering some knee pain" and that Midnight Bourbon galloped past the finish and was finally caught by an outrider.

It's interesting to compare numbers from the two Eastern tracks that had Grade 1 races yesterday. Monmouth attendance was 20,983; on track handle was $1,170,950 and off track was $15,243,595. The attendance at Saratoga was reported to be 25,520; on track handle was $4,582,684 and off track handle was $27,535,185. Lots of pent up demand from fans who couldn't attend the races in 2020.

Lots of pent up demand is right and that pretty much explains things for the economy as a whole. Some people griping about inflation now, but even a basic understanding of the dismal science pretty much explains things. I was a "D" student in Economics, but I think I at least got that much out of it.:zz: Just hope that people are not emerging from their Covid induced nap too soon. Numbers rising down here sorry to say, but I think it would be a rush to judgement to say politics is entirely to blame. Looks like a lot of young people are avoiding inoculation. I guess we all were like that at one time, thinking we're indestructible. All this to say, I will likely be wearing my mask for the foreseeable future. So far haven't encountered anyone that wants to give me a whuppin' because of it, thankfully.

Right ma'am or maybe you can lead a horse to water and you know the rest. At any rate, don't guess it serves much purpose to talk about it. We're all exhausted by it. Just hope everyone stays safe, but I imagine that we will. Our age group seems to be the one that takes it the most seriously.:tro: I for one am ready to take a trip somewhere and almost anywhere will do that I can drive. Will not be getting on any planes even if I do relish flying. Might go down to see my Brother in Fairhope, Alabama. I think some sea food is beckoning to me. We were just talking the other night about the Cajun culture not just being confined to South Louisiana, but also Texas and Mississippi and Alabama. Those folks know how to do sea food right.:)

I don't know whether I mentioned this before or not, at my age, I can't remember what I had for dinner last night, but I watched this show on Netflix called Heartland which was all about horses of just about every breed and situation. Episodes were about rodeo horses, jumpers, show horses, hunters, wild horses, draft horses, race horses, etc. Most of the episodes were about horses that presented problem behavior and I think there was an episode about a horse that was afraid of water. Series was on TV in Canada, I think for 13 years. It was filmed somewhere in Southern Alberta.

Cal, perhaps 10 or 12 years ago our small contest group had two players from Alberta, delightful ladies who used the screen names Leslie and Dapplehorse. Leslie and her husband operated a ranch in Southern Alberta and her daughter Dapplehorse graduated from a very well respected university in Alberta and became a thoroughbred trainer at Stampede Park. I think she once mentioned that her brother was a rodeo rider.

Real pretty scenery where the series was shot in the foothills of the Canadian Rockies. Makes you want to go up there and visit, but I think they are in the frying pan now and much cooler in Central Arkansas now, if you can imagine that. If you have Netflix, I recommend. Human interactions in the series not Emmy worthy(does Canadian TV qualify for Emmys?), but entertaining enough. I enjoyed it, but very long with 13 seasons. As I said, it's all things horses.
