Venue for 4/17

With two million dollar races coming up, those 2 races would have to be pretty terrible for us not to return to Oaklawn. Besides, I like Oaklawn.:D Not sure that I have any particular advantage there. I think I may have paid for a couple of those barns there they keep the horses in(just a tiny bit of hyperbole). Attendance there on Saturday something between 17 and 18k, but I guess that's good considering Covid.:wf

I don't know about you guys, but now that the preps are over, I'm starting to get the fever for the Kentucky Derby, but first I need to go out and add some money to my wagering accounts. My Xpressbet and Oaklawn Anywhere(Twinspires) accounts are down to the nubbins.

I know what you mean. I won a couple of weeks ago and then the next week had a similar score and didn't even hit the board. I enjoyed the racing this past weekend, but the high scores probably meant it was pretty predictable. Except I was a bit surprised that Baffert didn't win the Derby, but I guess I should have known that was a possibility when it seemed likely the two pacesetters were going to throw down against each other and set it up for a closer.:zz: I wonder even after the loss whether Baffert's horse might still be favored by some people?

Must say, I am a bit surprised you haven't hit some ginormous hit yet. You are way overdue!!

I'm starting to get a healthy dose of Derby Fever also. Only 19 days 7 hours 4 minutes and 11 seconds until post time but who's counting?:):)

My only difficulty is coming up with a Derby Horse [caps are intentional]. Once I move past Essential Quality so many of them look very much the same in ability. Even EQ hasn't run numbers that are that impressive. I sort of feel that whoever makes the most progress over the next three weeks and likes the track the best and gets the best trip is your winner. In short it could be anyone. But I have some time to rethink this absurd opinion and come up with something a bit more rational or at least betable.

As to this Saturday I like your idea of remaining at Oaklawn. Just hope the two major races draw decent fields. I fear that not many will want to take on both Swiss Skydiver and Monomoy girl in the Apple Blossom but the matchup of those two will be fun to watch.

THANKS CAL :{>:

Personally tho...
I am much more emotionally let down 😔 At my ROI horses 🐎
Failing to come through even though the odds of my longshots
Doing that I realize may be unlikely 😢

However as we all know in racing ...
“NO such thing as a Sure thing” ;)

“Any Horse 🐎 On Any Day Can Win “ :)

I have found that to be true over the years when
Horses I LOVE 💗 have come through for me = such as
SERAVA 70-1
Giacomo 50-1
One Dreamer 47-1

I agree. EQ seems vulnerable. I imagine I'll be playing some exotics, but unlikely to have him on top by himself, but like every year, there is still a lot of time to do some wringing of hands and having a few panic attacks before the actual race is run.:zz:

cal828 04-12-2021 11:46 AM

....and we do this and call it fun?:D

Oaklawn Park is the venue for 4/17. Races 3 through 12.

Big points numbers and great win Cal. Should bump me down a rung on the ladder. I'm as cold as ice but will get back to my basic approach since what I've been trying just isn't working at all. Goog luck on the Repeat. We haven't had many this year so far.

cal828 04-14-2021 08:42 AM

Thanks for the kind words, but my play has been all over the place. I am as capable of being last as of being first so I don't expect I'll repeat. I'm sure you'll get back in the groove before long as you are one of the better players. :tro:

I consider it a small miracle that they were able to assemble a field of 6. There may have been some twisting of arms by the Racing Secretary to persuade that many.

Of course that's true. But many trainers and owners, especially with stakes horses, tend to play the percentages and may be more interested in not getting beaten rather than pulling off upsets. They are looking at future breeding value where such things seem to matter. This trend seems to be increasing. I miss the attitude of a Wayne Lukas who was never afraid to take a shot no matter how unrealistic his chances might have been. And he pulled off some memorable upsets in the process.

LUKAS
The Main thing I recall about him

He had MORE 2 Yr Old BREAKDOWNS
Than any trainer ever

Just soured me on him
Never a fan

The name escapes me but in the 90's there was a NY horse who was a cut below the really good horses. He used to run in real short fields and would always plod around the track and pick up a nice check in each race even if he finished last. And he ran a lot. He might never have won but back in the day horses were a lot more sound and used to run frequently. I've said it before but I grew up watching horses run at Penn National simulcast from the Meadowlands and every race had 6 alternates. The races were bad but the fields were full.

My guess of the name would be Dollar Bill but I don't think he was bred in NY?
