Broke down training for a comeback last summer and was put down.

You can watch it on xpressbet. He battle 3 wide and draws off from a lugging in hoss who stopped the guy inside of him who was closing in .

If by some miracle the horse was able to simply survive it probably would be enough, but I suppose being afforded an opportunity to flame out in a foreshortened 6-start career also has its merits (at least in terms of a stallion career).

As it stands, Montauk--after breaking his maiden--skipped the BC because they didn't want to "ship him across country" then curiously skipped the late season juvenile races at Aqueduct and Churchill Downs because of "minor issues". Shipped to Florida for a Derby trail run, he pulled up stakes entirely because of a "minor throat issue" (by comparison Alysheba, Coronado's Quest, Frosted, and Holy Bull all had wind problems during the same part of the calendar year and didn't miss the classics because of them.)

My best guess, if he had the same connections, is that he would have been the next Army Mule.

He had the same trainer as Army Mule.

The weirdest part, as I recall, was how he shipped to Florida very quickly after his maiden win, as though they knew right away he wasn't running again that year.

2 explosive debuts though. Haven't seen many of those from Todd lately. Honestly the Derby trail feels off without him.

The Derby Trail has barely started. Good horses make it interesting. There appear to be some prospects for that this year. At least people haven't started their predictable hating on this crop yet.
