Durkin vs Denman

Both of them i feel are great announcers and i enjoy listening to both of them.My feeling after today is that on a national stage like today Durkin gets the edge. This is not a knock on Trevor Denman, but he seemed to call the races like he was calling a regular card in California rather than on racings elite day.Your opinions and criticism are appreciated.

randallscott35 11-04-2006 05:22 PM

Durkin por favor....But Durkin isn't the same in the last few years.

Five Star Derek 11-04-2006 05:24 PM

Denman is my favorite but I do think Durkin does better on a national stage.

Denman wasnt very strong at all today. Cant believe he missed Street Sense until he was a half dozen lengths clear. Was too emphatuated with Circular Quay...

Sightseek 11-04-2006 05:42 PM

Ithought Denman was horrendous.

Nothing in his calls stood out in my mind, you barely knew he was there. The Churchill regular caller was more exciting calling Tiz Wonderful's race than what Denman gave today. I thought I saw a jockey flip off a horse in the Distaff and Denman never once in the call mentioned that Pine Island had gone down. Awful, awful job.

An excellent point.

I agree on both counts here. Totally missing Street Sense was inexcusable and not even mentioning Pine Island was wrong.

It did bother me that Trevor missed Street Sense. But I think u need to keep in mind that this was his first time on the national stage like this. Durkin was at it for over 20 years. How was his first BC compared to when he was a BC vet? I would imagine it's got to be pretty hard to go from calling 4-5 horse races like they normally have in CA to calling 14 horses in these races. Overall, I thought Trevor was fine and he'll only be better next year.

randallscott35 11-04-2006 05:48 PM

To be fair, Durkin was just as bad missing the entire move by Pleasant Home last year until she was in front. In fact that was worse.

Yes, it was way worse. It seemed like he didn't even know she was in the field let alone making a winning move. It happens.

Denman was a big no show today.. What ever his West coast attraction is didn't translate to the BC. Give me Durkin...hell, give me Trav. In fact, you guys need to listen to Travis...he is an up and comer..

That was truly unbelievable. Here is a horse that is drawing away by 6 lengths at the 1/8th pole and Denman doesn't even mention his name. He didn't even notice the horse until the horse was in front by 8 lengths at the 1/16th pole. How could you not see a horse that is front by 5-6 lengths at the 1/8th pole? I don't get it. That was an amazing blunder.

Durkins first breeders cup was a masterpiece.People forget that Durkin was not known before the breeders cup.He had been calling the races at Hialeah and then harness racing at the meadowlands.I think Durkin did much more preparation for the cup than Trevor and it showed.Durkin would have had a little tidbit to say for certain horses and i'm sure after Invasor crossed the finish line would of been ready to mention that Jara was the youngest jock to win a breeders cup.I think his ego came into play on breeders cup day.I didn't see the early races and just listened to the call of Street Sense and that was not good. One of the faults i see with Trevor is that he will zone in on a horse and make him the winner when he's still 5 lengths behind. On a national stage when you have many casual fans watching you need someone strong.Vic Stauffer would be an animal on a day like today.

Been saying all along how terrible he is, and now many of you can it see as well.

In addition to the things already mentioned, let's not forget his routine mispronunciations (Mystique's Approval and Ba-LEE-toe).

The dude sucks, period.

ArlJim78 11-04-2006 06:31 PM

Shall we sum it up by saying that like some of the Cali horses, Denman doesn't perform well outside the state.

It was surprising, he is good on his home tracks but he did not do well today imo.

I was gonna say the same thing. His performance was eerily similar to that of Lava Man.

He's been butchering names forever, though.

eajinabi 11-04-2006 06:39 PM

Denman is great but his calls today wasn't a standout. Just like any other race he calls. The louder his voice gets the fainter weaker it becomes. Durkin on the other hand has loud and deeper voice which suits for BC.

Even if Durkin is under contract with NBC, I think Vic Stauffer would have suited perfectly for Breeders Cup today.

randallscott35 11-04-2006 06:40 PM

Dave Johnson would've been better today. LOL
