Thoroughbred racing is a sport filled with the highest of highs and the lowest of lows. Some of the most thrilling and surreal moments of our entire lives have occurred in this sport. Unfortunately, today we have suffered our most devastating. We have lost Shared Belief. He seemed to display signs of Colic this morning so our vets rushed in to treat him. They immediately sent him to UC Davis so he could get the best medical attention available, as quickly as possible. Emergency Colic surgery was performed, but doctors were unable to save him. We are still awaiting results of an autopsy. We are all absolutely devastated. Shared Belief was a once in a lifetime horse. A champion, fighter and unbelievable talent who impacted and changed all of our lives. The little horse that feared no one and could do anything. He absolutely loved his job and to compete and run. As heartbreaking as this is, we all consider ourselves so fortunate to have been a part of this amazing animal’s life. He was a super horse from day one. He would end up winning 10 of 12 starts, including 5 G1’s and an Eclipse Award. The Big Horse was a champion in every sense of the word. There will never be another like Shared Belief. Our hearts are broken. RIP, Champ.

This is definitely one of the lowest lows. Rest in peace Champ...you will be missed.

Normally these things just make me shrug and say "well damnit" and I spend a moment to think back on the horse and the thrills they gave us and wish them peace. This one hurts and I'm actually tearing up a bit. So much untouched talent in this gelding. What a loss for us as fans.

My heart goes out to his connections and those closest to the big gelding who have an empty stall to look at.

clambeau 12-03-2015 07:02 PM

Didn't we all NEED that horse to race in 2016 ? There will always be others, but......Empty feeling

OldDog 12-03-2015 07:34 PM

Unbelievable. This really is devastating, a huge loss.

Kasept 12-04-2015 01:45 AM

Can only repeat my comment from earlier today.. Hard to accept how a being so indomitable in competition can be so equally fragile.. Condolences to all that touched or loved Shared Belief.

Definitely leaves an emptiness as we look towards the coming year. I think all of the older horse stakes will leave us with a "what could have been" had Shared Belief lined up against them all.

I stand firm in believing this horse was a Breeders Cup Classic winner had he not been mugged out of the gate, but that's racing luck and history at this point. He'd have been unbeaten until pulled up in the CTC. Absolute shame to be robbed of this glorious animal when on the cusp of what could have been a season to rival any of the best.

Godspeed to Lady Eli. She's all I'm looking forward to in the older horse ranks so far.

BigBlue 12-04-2015 02:24 PM

Awful news ... was looking forward to more from this guy. Terrible.

Sightseek 12-06-2015 10:55 AM

This one hit hard. What a special horse and he leaves us feeling like he could have done so much more.
