FREE lawn jockey statue if you live in NE Ohio
I am planning a long-distance move, and have a very nice lawn jockey that I can't take with me. It was completely stripped and repainted in 2012 with all-weather paint. Nice addition to your back yard, although I currently have it in my living room, and it looks great indoors too!
E-mail me at Hoblin@twc.com, and I can send you photos. You can also see photos on the Craigslist site for Cleveland, if you search for "lawn jockey". I have it listed for $90 on Craigslist, but just let me know that you saw this on the DerbyTrail forum, and it's yours for free. I would rather have it go to a good home than have to set it by the dumpster on moving day. I'm in Beachwood. |
Hoblin.. This is an ideal wedding present for Doug Salvatore in Erie! Will send you a note.

Whoa, Dougie got hitched?
I wonder if the ceremony is going to be at Presque Isle and if RHT made the cut as the best man. |

:tro: Hello old friend. Hope you and Tina are well. |
The statue was adopted this morning by a loving family in western Pennsylvania. If it does end up with black and gold silks, I will tell myself that it's in honor of Seattle Slew, and not the dreaded Steelers :)

I'll tell you my experiences. I live up in Pennsylvania and I used to have friends in Louisville and Lexington and I kind of got into the Lawn Jockey business in the 1990's. I'd get them to send them up to me and sell them to farm owners up here. My favorites were the electric wired ones with lamps in their hands. I used to get from $400 to $1200 for them back when that was a lot of money.
I got out when people called it racist. People started painting the faces white or brown. Actually I thought it was unfortunate because these figures were not characicatures. Jimmy Winkfield is a good story. People like to find discrimination everywhere, but I've found it to to the least in the Horse Racing business than in life. If you are good, you can hang in horse racing. Good examples are Julie Krone and Rosie Napravnik. Horseplayers loved them. So women are OK. I find that if you can win races, you can be from Mars. Which is great. This is a great melting pot. We got trainers from all over the world. We got men and women. We got jockeys from all over. It's fantastic. I really think Horse Racing is the most un-discriminatory thing there is. It's all about horse and racing. |
