G1 Florida Derby winner Materiality has been retired due to soft tissue injury sustained while training, per his connections.

FASTEST 3-YEAR-OLD in America baby! Faster than American Pharoah...How could you not send your mare to him?

Florida Derby figures are solid as a rock! Upstart has them validated.

Regardless of whether the FL Derby figs were accurate, no one can question his durability. Who wouldn't want to breed to another fast horse that couldn't make it half-way through his 3-yr-old campaign?

Different trainers have different objectives and programs. Some trainers are given liberty to develop a horse others are required to win early and get victories on books to satisfy connections. It's just the reality of game. Partnerships are great for exposing the modest owner to high quality stock, it comes at an expense to the longer term progress of the sport. The conversation on its impact on the game is a good one, positive and negatives on both sides of the coin.

Sweet Lord, Fred.

What? A premature retirement is proof that the Florida Derby wasn't a fast race?

You're actually being pretty disingenuous given some of your other posts, especially during the Belmont Stakes, where there was a few posts predicting this exact thing (Materiality being toast).

I suppose when Violette fries Upstart for good (probably next out), that colt's previous races will also cease to be fast.

I guess I am struggling to see where racing partnerships have lead to horses retiring early? Every situation is different really, every horse for that matter. Are you saying that partnership look for quicker results?

Not proof simply anecdotal. Case could be made that it was too fast to soon and fried them.

The real shame is this colt had real talent and IMO could have been a super nice type. Also could have tripped in a paddock as well?

Some sure. Consider they purchase stock on the come and THEN sell into the offering. You think its harder or easier for a salesperson to pick up phone and say Watch our LAST purchase you missed run in the XXX Stakes this weekend or Come down to the barn and look at this one in the stall

The partnerships like to sell the experience so anything they can sell is better for them, so yeah they sell the bigger tracks and races for sure, sensationalize. I would rather run a horse I own myself or with one other at finger lakes than 10% of a horse at Saratoga and have to have stars align to get real interface with the trainer. Trainers must hate them as well. The problem with some of these partnerships is the premium that many charge to buy in, lots of mouths to feed at a few of these places, some partnerships are much much better than others, some are just capital injections for the organizers so they can parade around like a big owner. They have pros and cons but are definitely the way the industry is trending
