civil war anniversary
 

this week marks 150 years since the end of the civil war (or war between the states...or, here in the south where they're still 'fighting it', the war of northern aggression :rolleyes: ).

grant pressed lee hard, trying to get him beaten before sherman arrived. so, first petersburg, than richmond, and then lee fled...but not fast enough. surrender terms were first discussed on april 7, and the formal surrender was on april 9. joshua chamberlain, a hero from gettysburg (and formerly a professor at Bowdoin college, he once was given a 'posthumous promotion' but survived his injury) was chosen to receive the surrender.

an interesting side note to appomattox...the house where lee and grant met was owned by the mclean family. at the outset of war, this family lived in manassas, virginia. so, they had a battle right at their front door. mr. wilber mclean decided he didn't want to be in the middle, literally, of the fighting, so he moved his family south-and was a front row witness to the ending of the war. people wanting a souvenir of the surrender pretty much wiped out the furnishings in the room where the surrender was signed.

formal surrender was on april 9th which was palm sunday. the following friday, 'good friday', lincoln was shot. early that saturday morning he died from his wound.

I watch H2 late nite quite a bit and about week ago they had couple hours of the Civil war, showed all the big battles and the surrender..

Transferred down here in '73 with a large contingent from (W) in PA..locals called us Yanks we called them Rebs or rednecks:)..no serious stuff..and they thought we talked funny..
The schools integrated in '69..in '74 or '75 at one of the small 'mansions' on the 'rich' road some guys burned a cross in the front yard:eek:...turns out the 15 yo daughter that lived there had dated a black kid:eek:..

And they will be filming a movie down this way...

You mention integration, which reminded me of something I read...just finished 'c ivil war and reconstruction' by James mcpherson, which I highly recommend.
The Kentucky legislators passed the 'day law' in 1902 or 04, which made integration illegal!

What an unbelievable website.
Please read the instructions before viewing...These pictures are very profound. It is fortunate that these photos have survived. Most probably a million wet plate photos were made during the civil war on glass plate.

Popular during the war, they lost their appeal afterwards and so many were sold for the glass. Many used in green houses. Over the years the sun caused the images to disappear.

These are pretty amazing considering they were taken over to 150 years ago: A compendium of photos from era of the War Between the States.

the 150th anniversary of another tragedy tied to the war is on the 27th of this month...the sinking of the ss sultana near memphis, severely overloaded with union wounded and former pow's trying to get home. the boat could carry about 400, she had around 2100 souls aboard when her boilers exploded. they never got an exact death toll, but it's thought to be over 1700 lost.

I just finished a book on thr war and reconstruction, and of course the 14th amendment was covered...just sae this article on the amendment and the man who wrote it, so i thought id share. And thank goodness he kept it...simple. clear, brief, and means so much to ALL citizens.

Excellent article, I pray today's Supreme Court follows the Constitution and allows all Americans the right to marry.

i just wish we could find politicians now that would measure up to those of days gone by.
well, not the 'grab your cane and beat you with it' kind!
