civil war anniversary

this week marks 150 years since the end of the civil war (or war between the states...or, here in the south where they're still 'fighting it', the war of northern aggression  ).

grant pressed lee hard, trying to get him beaten before sherman arrived. so, first petersburg, than richmond, and then lee fled...but not fast enough. surrender terms were first discussed on april 7, and the formal surrender was on april 9. joshua chamberlain, a hero from gettysburg (and formerly a professor at Bowdoin college, he once was given a 'posthumous promotion' but survived his injury) was chosen to receive the surrender.

an interesting side note to appomattox...the house where lee and grant met was owned by the mclean family. at the outset of war, this family lived in manassas, virginia. so, they had a battle right at their front door. mr. wilber mclean decided he didn't want to be in the middle, literally, of the fighting, so he moved his family south-and was a front row witness to the ending of the war. people wanting a souvenir of the surrender pretty much wiped out the furnishings in the room where the surrender was signed.

formal surrender was on april 9th which was palm sunday. the following friday, 'good friday', lincoln was shot. early that saturday morning he died from his wound.

Civil War drama filming in county.

The historical authenticity of Virginia continues to draw film production to the state. The feature film “Josephine” will be filming in Halifax County this spring, helmed by Academy of Country Music award-winner Rory Feek.
“Josephine” is a Civil War drama about a woman who enlists in the Confederate army as a man in order to find her missing husband…and is based on actual letters and events.
“The project was originally inspired by historical letters I read written by John Robison to his wife, Josephine. I created a song and music video based on them also titled “Josephine”…but then a few years later, someone sent me letters from Josephine to John, and a whole different story began to unfold that was much larger. The film’s screenplay centers around the deep love these two characters have for one another,” said writer/director Rory Feek.
“Virginia offers filmmakers an unrivaled historical and visual backdrop for important stories of all kinds,” said Gov.Terry McAuliffe. “This project will showcase the exceptional natural beauty of this area of the commonwealth and shine a light on the loyalty, dedication and sacrifice made by women during the Civil War. I am proud to welcome the filmmakers to Virginia.”
Secretary of Commerce and Trade Maurice Jones said, “Halifax County is a wonderful place for travelers, with historic sites and exceptional outdoor recreational opportunities. We welcome this film, which will not only bring jobs and revenue to the commonwealth but will serve to promote the tourism assets in the region.”

You mention integration, which reminded me of something I read...just finished 'c ivil war and reconstruction' by James mcpherson, which I highly recommend.
The Kentucky legislators passed the 'day law' in 1902 or 04, which made integration illegal!

What an unbelievable website.
Please read the instructions before viewing...These pictures are very profound. It is fortunate that these photos have survived. Most probably a million wet plate photos were made during the civil war on glass plate.

Popular during the war, they lost their appeal afterwards and so many were sold for the glass. Many used in green houses. Over the years the sun caused the images to disappear.

These are pretty amazing considering they were taken over to 150 years ago: A compendium of photos from era of the War Between the States.

the 150th anniversary of another tragedy tied to the war is on the 27th of this month...the sinking of the ss sultana near memphis, severely overloaded with union wounded and former pow's trying to get home. the boat could carry about 400, she had around 2100 souls aboard when her boilers exploded. they never got an exact death toll, but it's thought to be over 1700 lost.

Excellent article, I pray today's Supreme Court follows the Constitution and allows all Americans the right to marry.
