1/23: Santa Anita ($419k DBL C/O; $39k Hi-5 C/O)

SANTA ANITA PARK

POST-SCRATCHES

3rd: CLM, 4+, 6.5f-T (P6, P3)

Dance Star, never off the board on this course, a likely winner on front end if unopposed; Zimmer, fit for Shirreffs off the break, a major player if the downhill trip is to his liking; Hotradamus, Royal F J & A Toast to You all with chance..

Most Likely: #5 He's a Dance Star 2-1 2nd
Best Value: #4 Zimmer 4-1 WON ($11.20)
Next Best: #7 Hotradamus 7-2 5th
Exotics Use: #2 A Toast to You 5-2 4th

4th: MCLM/$30k, 3yo, 5.5f (P3, DD)

New Order obvious horse to beat but firster Gutsy Ruler has :47.2 gate spin that catches the eye to go along with string of 5f drills. W. Giles is by early development sire Swiss Yodeler and from win early Harrington barn, but he's saddled with 11/0-0-0 Alberto Delgado. Career 0/9 Exponentially SCR'D, usually the type you let beat you, is a 'C' if you can afford him..

Most Likely: #5 New Order 5-2 5th
Next Best: #2 Gutsy Ruler 4-1 WON ($5.80)
Best Value: #3 W. Giles 6-1 3rd
Exotics Use: #7 SCR

5th: Cal-MSW, 4+, 1m-T (P4, P3)

Intriguing cast here with 5 runners stretching out (1-3-4-7-8) and 4 trying lawn for first time (1-6-8-9). Of the new grass types, Awesome Prospect from Len Powell is a major jump up candidate bred top and bottom for the surface. Breeder Barbara Kelly's 'private' sire Fullbridled has just 19 progeny, but they win (16%) and Powell trained him to a 6/2-2-1 career on turf including a photo loss in the '05 Dallas Turf Cup at Lone Star. Dam Most Awesome went winless in 7 tries for Niall O'Callaghan but her best races came on grass and she is a sister of turf winner (dirt stake-placed) Lauren C. Upset special. All the stretchout players assure this of having a brisk pace and new gelding Public Interest should be the chief beneficiary. As a sidebar and proviso here, I need to acknowledge that between my top picks, respective jocks Julien Couton and Jose Valdivia are a combined 0/31. Skipping to 4th tab We Have Lift Off, pilot Aaron Gryder adds another 0/19..

Best Value: #6 Awesome Prospect 12-1 WON ($29.00)
Next Best: #9 Public Interest 7-2 3rd
Exotics Use: #3 Stake Hunter 6-1 6th
Super Add: #1 We Have Lift Off 8-1 10th

6th: CLM, 4+, 1m (P3, DD)

Most Likely: #4 Red Sharp Humor 5-2 7th
Best Value: #7 Majestic Moment 8-1 2nd
Next Best: #2 Warren's Joe T. 7-2 5th
Exotics Use: #8 Only the Gold 9-2 WON ($15.00)
Super Add: #3 Brown Boss 7-2 6th

7th: Cal-OC/N1X, F&M-4+, 1m-T (DD)

Taken in October for $32k, Miss Well Molded cleared this condition in December '12 and with a win and claim away would earn $60k for O'Neill and some of his regular clients. Shouldn't lose here..

Most Likely: #4 Miss Well Molded 9-5 WON ($4.60)
Best Value: #7 Lil Swiss Echo 6-1 7th
Next Best: #6 Tanquerray 7-2 3rd
Exotics Use: #5 Warren's Rosebud 6-1 4th

8th: MCLM/$30k, 3yo, 1m (Super Hi-5)

$39k Hi-5 C/O here..

Most Likely: #3 Runaway Que 2-1 WON ($5.20)
Next Best: #5 Bluegrass Fox Trot 7-2 3rd
Best Value: #9 Run for Pleasure 6-1 7th
Exotics Use: #1 Thunders Echo 10-1 5th
Super Add: # #8 Sir Macho 4-1 2nd

Thanks Billy. Also discussed extensively with Brad Free Wednesday. Thought we were a chicken in a pot midstretch.

THX Dave. That was sweet. Hope many came along..

Steve - Ten minutes from post time at Santa Anita for the last race - saw that your Pick-4 tickets are alive to the 3 and 5 for $1K+ and $2K+. At this point, do you hedge any of your tickets with other bets or do you stand pat?

(Have always wanted to discuss this on the radio show with you.)

Kasept 01-23-2014 06:35 PM

Scott,

I don't.. It's been a very good afternoon and I'm up no matter what happens, so I won't be suicidal if the 3 or 5 don't win. The only time I've 'bought insurance' is when live to 5 figure payoffs. You do it if you feel like you won't be able to sleep if you come away with nothing...

Congrats Steve! Curious as to what your other bets consist of. Do you roll pick 3's, play doubles, or play exacta's and tri's.

Nice P4 Steve. As I have said before, the California circuit is something you seem to have a handle on.

Yeah.. I'm useless every else.

Access to Andy Harrington's National Turf for West Coast workouts is one of the major positive factors to success there.

Thanks! I play P3's and tri keys. With a longshot play like Awesome Prospect I'll play to win and in addition to exotic keys, I'll backwheel them in exactas with logicaqls (and sometimes 'all') and utilize the Ken Karchner 'reverse tri key' with the price play third under 4 or 5 horses. As it happens with him today, I only caught the win tote and exacta as Do Some Magic was only covered in the 3rd slot, which was too bad.

Thanks Gus! Always helps when you have time leading up and can get 2-3 looks at the sequence. Talking it out with Brad Free and Rich Eng a positive too.
