This makes me think of my former riding teacher, who had been an exercise rider at the track, and our discussion about Jane Smiley's novel Horse Heaven. She thought the affair between the married owner of Limitless and his trainer was just preposterous and would never, ever happen in real life. Now I wonder if, in fact, Smiley had heard gossip and was doing a little roman à clef. Heh.

I would assume it is quite common.
