CONAN O’BRIEN TO PINCH HIT FOR TREVOR DENMAN ON FRIDAY

Trevor Denman will get a rare time-out on Friday. Late night funny man Conan O’Brien, who hosts CONAN weeknights at 11 p.m. on TBS, will step up to the Santa Anita microphone and call Friday’s second race under the watchful eye of America’s premier race caller.

“I think it’s great,” said Denman, who has been calling races at Santa Anita since the fall of 1983. “Conan is universally well-known and well-liked and this is a great way for us to help get the word out on the Breeders’ Cup and live racing here at Santa Anita. He’s a great talent and my advice is always the same—keep it simple and try and have fun with it.”

Announcing styles aside, O’Brien, with high-hair and a 6’ 4” frame, will strike a notable contrast to Denman, who originally aspired to be a jockey in his native South Africa.

id rather it was jimmy fallon. just hope conan does a better job than bobby flay when he called a race.

I think it's great. He'll be funny, the winner might get to meet him and take a picture (assuming he comes down to the winner's circle for something like this). It's a $32,000 claimer for fillies and mares 3 & up. Nobody's gonna be wearing Goldophin blue or anything. Like the winner's gonna be there thinking that the occasion was so darn solemn before Conan got involved. Maybe they're trying to lose the horse in the first place.

Some of his old shows were. Pretty wild...felt like he was edgy and something different...havent followed him in years now...though this was a bad call and not funny...he obviously had some time to prep for this all of 2 mins performance...surely doesn't show...looked like he just showed up called the race and left...doesnt care about the sport nor his act...came off the a prick

If you read the piece (I think on Bloodhorse.com) he genuinely tried to prepare but he didn't realize how racecallers do it. He thought he was supposed to memorize by color of saddlecloth not jockey's silks. He showed up all ready to go and they were like 'um nope.' So he scrambled to do what he did.
