I just love this old guy still knocking hard day in and day out. Lots of meds to keep him happy and pain free.

randallscott35 08-02-2013 07:35 PM

Wasn't he scratched out of the Cup because he was so unsound? Sad

geeker2 08-02-2013 10:10 PM

Hey Gary ...where the F are you

Yes, i remember the ordeal very well. The Barber bros. made a big stink about the vets not passing him for the Sprint. Took him over a year to get off the vets list!

Calzone Lord 08-03-2013 05:32 AM

He's $633 short of a $1 million in career earnings.

Could become, possibly, the first horse in history to surpass $1 million in career earnings, in a 5 furlong 8k claiming turf sprint at Santa Rosa.

An unchallenging 5th or 6th place.

 As Randall said, at least he is still alive. And enjoying that California sunshine.:)

Can't imagine they're not aiming for $1 million before retirement. Came up just short. Hopefully one more start will do it and get him that final $291. I know it sounds silly to have a G1 winner in that situation, but if he's sound, it's not the worst goal. He won't be getting back to GSW level so this is the biggest achievement he can still get.

He's had a couple really long layoffs in his career, but it's been a few years since then. Monzante was coming back off a 3rd long layoff when he had his problem.

Claimed for 8K Sat by Robertino Diodoro for Rick Wiest - ran 2nd to last at $1.07/1

Maybe they will turn him into a house pony. :wf

randallscott35 12-22-2013 09:48 AM

He runs until he breaks down...."It is the business we've chosen."

Rudeboyelvis 12-22-2013 11:37 AM

@carlocallghan : Retire Cost of Freedom hasn't he done enough? Runs 2nd last for $8000 (greed)

Well said.....hope the new connections have class enough to do the right thing by this guy

Merlinsky 12-22-2013 08:57 PM

So the previous owners hit $1 million and kept going? Ok, I think I'm allowed to call anybody who races after that point jerks. It was understandable enough (though not applaudable) when it was a matter of hundreds of dollars until he hits a milestone like that. He could've gone out a winner to boot. Hopefully he'll at least go out after that 10th place. If you thought it was bad when Monzante broke down, wait til a millionaire has to be euthanized. The outrage will be deafening. Talk about a PR nightmare too.

It's not just about the big name horses, but it's what they represent about our commitment to dealing with this issue. Definitely hope the new connections do the right thing. Maybe they claimed him for that purpose. He's earned a retirement many times over.
