Dominguez has fractured skull after scary heel clip spill

Ramon Dominguez is stable, sedated and being held overnight at Jamaica Hospital. Has bruise over right eye. Doctors evaluating scan for what may be a small hairline scull fracture, but overall, he appears to have escaped serious injury.

His mount Convocation miraculously OK..

DRF update says he has a fractured skull and is in critical condition.

Hope he pulls through this OK. :(

Dominguez was taken to Jamaica Medical Center, where a slightly displaced skull fracture was diagnosed. He was in critical condition the first 48 hours because of bleeding in the brain. He was upgraded to stable condition over the weekend.

Dominguez was transferred Tuesday to NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center in Manhattan.

“Ramon is doing really well and resting comfortably,” his wife, Sharon, said Tuesday, according to a New York Racing Association news release. Doctors have prohibited him from having visitors.

Sharon Dominguez said there was no timetable for when her husband could be out of the hospital. According to the few people who have seen him, doctors were apparently keeping him sedated to make sure he remained as calm as possible and to prevent complications. Dominguez also badly bruised his right eye in the spill. Convocation, his mount, was unharmed.

Dominguez Enters Rehabilitation Program

“Ramon continues to do well and is improving every day,” said the three-time Eclipse champion jockey’s wife, Sharon Dominguez. “He was transferred to Burke on Wednesday, completed initial evaluations on Thursday, and started a brain injury rehabilitation program on Friday. As Ramon takes the next steps in his treatment, he and I would like to thank everyone again for the continued support and prayers. Although his injury will take time to heal, Ramon is on the road to a full recovery.”

Dominguez released from rehabilitation center, discusses his future plans

“I really feel excellent,” Dominguez said Tuesday afternoon in his first interview since suffering a skull fracture in a spill at Aqueduct on Jan. 18. “I have been in great hands since I came here, doing all different types of therapies. Everyone’s been extremely helpful. There’s really nothing I could ask to be better. I feel like everyone’s doing an excellent job getting me closer to my goal, which is to be 100 percent healthy and – whenever the doctor sees fit – for me to come back and ride.”
