I think she was one of those who got her big break because the performer for whom she was understudying got sick one night and she got a chance. If I remember my useless trivia correctly.

Great singer. RIP.

You are right. Heard it on NPR this morning. It's also where she got the stage name, it was the Page Milk Co. show or something like that. Real name was Fowler.
