The Penny Chenery Award

Every year it gets funnier.

This time, the esteemed panel nominated five horses for it.

This upset certain pockets of the Internet.

An outcry among pretty horsey/sick horsey lovers was heard ... and Shackleford and Paynter are added.

Oddly, a foreign horse (the great Frankel) is on the list. But the foreign horse with the most passoniate fan base (Black Caviar) isn't.

Looking forward to see who takes the torch of last years winner, Rapid Redux.

Actually, I'm not.

I voted for Zenyatta.

Five horses who generated headlines for their feats in 2012 have been nominated for the third annual Secretariat Vox Populi ("Voice of the People") Award.
If news articles have to explain what the name of the award means, it's a bad name.

Five thousand people packed Federation Square and stayed up at 2AM to watch Black Caviar's ultra gutty if unimpressive win in a Group 1 at Royal Ascot.

Here's the video:

Isn't that supposed to be what this stupid award is about?

If the award was supposed to be about performance ... Rapid Redux wouldn't have come close. He was running in all Nickle starter races in the mid-atlantic for God sakes.

If you want to say the award isn't about foreign horses ... why the hell is Frankel nominated?

Frankel was the best horse in the world ... but his campaign simply wasn't that interesting and he didn't have anything close to the popularity Black Caviar did when it came to passionate fans.

I'm confused. This is supposed to be a voice of the people award but the winner is chosen by a committee?

Calzone Lord 12-06-2012 04:08 PM

It was meant to be a special award for Zenyatta to get after she lost the BC Classic to Blame and appearantly any shot at Horse of the Year.

Committee puts group together.. 'Fans' then vote..

Tweet of the Day?

Ed DeRosa ‏@EJXD2: I hope it's not too late to add Pulpit to the list of Vox Populi nominees

Isn't this like voting for the President of Iran? The clear winner has to be Eblouissante. After all, she has some of Zenyatta's blood and she is undefeated.

I would say probably 10 times more "racing fans" know more about her than Successful Dan.

And, I'm pretty sure his full brother Wise Dan or Zenyatta in her prime wouldn't have a chance with him on Alysheba day. When, In outstanding time, he completely overpowered a no-excuse 2nd and no-excuse 3rd place finishers who broke open the BC Classic together later in the year.

Claimers

The day they start nominating outstanding "cheaper" horses perhaps starter allowance ponies who venture into the right alw conditioned spot and do seven of ten wins, Is the day a poll will matter to me .

Oh and by cheaper, I mean cheaper, the kind the average man or group could get together with a trainer , maybe on deal or maybe paying the full freight on there own.

The 6,250 (where did that number come from), 10,000 or 12,500 but not much higher

You mean like the horse that won last year?
