George McGovern gone

Though he is remembered for his opposition to the Vietnam War, he was a pilot in WWII- here's a link to a really interesting story about a bombing run that stayed with him, and its surprising resolution 40 years later:

Rick Perlstein's Nixonland covers the 1968 and 1972 Presidential elections in depth, and is a very interesting read for those who, like me, didn't know much about McGovern, other than as a punchline to a joke (and, for that matter, about George Romney, who comes across very, very well in the book).

George McGovern was a great American. He was a true liberal Democrat unlike these intolerant kneejerk leftwing assholes that don't tolerate dissent from the party line. Mr. Mc govern was the first candidate I ever voted for. I wish we had more men like him in government today, maybe I would even vote again. RIP to a true American.

:tro: Never voted for him but he was indeed a "true" progressive, a war hero who recognized the horror of war and Vietnam
