Saratoga Opening Day Entries Contest

Today is entry day for Friday. How many horses will be entered for the opening day card

(Prediction will be based off of 10 race card so if you guess 130 then your average will be 13, Im not sure how many races they will have)

My entry is 168

so, you're predicting 16.8 entries per race?

I assume the 2yo MSW race they normally card on opening day will split into 2 divisions with the limit on field size.

Yes, probably a little high but with purses I think the first two weeks will be the best full card consistent racing we've seen in a while

116...And I also forgot the stakes races which wouldn't have a full field. Bad handicapping! (Not uncommon recently for me)

How good is the James Marvin!

You're right, 116. The James Marvin has consistently been great since it was introduced. Graded for the first time this year, I believe.

An overview of the card at a quick glance

Race #1 is loaded for the class level.

Race #2 NY Bred maiden fillies going long on grass. Weak group for the level in terms of the non-debuting runners. The combined record of the 12 horses in the body of the race is 50 starts 0 wins 0 second place finishes and 4 third place finishes.

Race #3: 2yo MSW race for fillies. Division #1. Pletcher debuts a 525K Bernardini from the Fasig Tipton FLA 2yo sale. Ward has one that has been 2nd in all 3 career starts and three different tracks. Romans has a 300K War Front -- terrible debut breeding -- could be one to follow 2nd or 3rd time out and with more distance.

Race #4: 82K N1X Alw for females 3 and up. Book Review will be a heavy favorite off of a 98 Beyer last out and a win over the sensation of the 2011 2yo sales Dance Card two back.

Race #5: Division #2 of the 2yo MSW for Fillies. Pletcher has another expensive Fasig Tipton Florida sale debuter. Violette has a debuter bought for these kind of races. Zito is normally terrible with debuters -- but he's got a Distorted Humor that looks serious. Shug has an Indian Charlie debuter -- the dam is a half sibling to Formal Gold. Dutrow and Dominguez with a Hard Spun working bullets.

Race #6: 20K Claimer on the grass. George Weaver is giving up on Powhatan County for a second time. He was 2nd to Soldat in the Grade 3 With Anticipation Stakes at Saratoga as a 2yo. Won his 3yo debut over Animal Kingdom ... less than 2 months later Animal Kingdom won the Kentucky Derby. He won the only other time Weaver plunged him down the class ladder and in for a tag.

Race #7: MSW for 3 and up females on the turf. Lukas sends out a filly who he ran in five stakes races, including the KY Oaks, BEFORE he ever tried her in a maiden race. Money burner Lilly The Pink is in here. She's been a beaten favorite six different times at this level. Maker and Jimmy Jerkens both have interesting 2nd time starters.

Race #8: Jackson Bend should return to glory here -- he and Caixa Electronica both have a ton of pace to help them in this spot.

Race #9: Baby J (daughter of J Be K) goes first time Dutrow. This race is always loaded with one-way speed horses.

Race #10: 25K Maiden claiming turf sprint. A West Acre debuts for Rudy Rod.
