I’ll Have Another is the 12th three-year-old to win the Kentucky Derby (G1) and the Preakness Stakes (G1) since Affirmed last swept the Triple Crown in 1978. The great Spectacular Bid in 1979 came up short in the Belmont Stakes (G1) as did Pleasant Colony (1981), Alysheba (1987), Sunday Silence (1989), Silver Charm (1997), Real Quiet (1998), Charismatic (1999), War Emblem (2002), Funny Cide (2003), Smarty Jones (2004), and Big Brown (2008). Which begs the question, who would win in a race between I’ll Have Another and the aforementioned 11 Derby-Preakness winners since Affirmed?

What was Spectacular Bid doing in last early -- about 40 lengths off of the early pace?

He's a horse that ran 7 furlongs in 1:20 and change as a 2yo and ran 7 furlongs in 1:20 flat off of a layoff in the Malibu.

He also won in wire-to-wire fashion eight different times in his career -- not including his walkover win in the Woodward.

I'll Have Another beating Spectacular Bid and Sunday Silence is as absurd as the simulation they did where Zenyatta beat Citation, Affirmed, and other greats.

In my opinion, Spectacular Bid should be rated as clear-cut the best dirt horse of all-time. It's almost a complete no-brainer.

And I don't think many people have studied as many great horses as I have.

He was an all-time great 2-year-old. An all-time great 3-year-old. An all-time great 4-year-old.

One of the fastest 2yo's in history. One of the fastest 3yo's in history. One of the fastest 4yo's in history.

One of the most traveled and tested horses of the last 50 years.

One of the most tactically versatile horses in history.

Well -- the video game loss did occur at 12 furlongs -- so he remains undefeated at all distances from 6.5 furlongs to 1 1/4 miles.

The Bid was a monster no doubt. As I said originally, I think he would crush that field.

Obviously, having seen Zenyatta take down Citation and Affirmed and I'll Have Another beat Spectacular Bid ... I knew Barbaro would be a lock in this race.

I was conflicted on who they would have win this race -- it had to be Afleet Alex or Smarty Jones based on who they decided would win the other races ... check out how they handled it. It's at 2:50 in.

That was some ride. What do they have against Elliot? And wouldn't Rachel have been much more competitive with this group?

I just hated this horse. He just destroyed my favorite horse when i was a kid, Flying Paster. Just like the Vikings were to the Rams, i just hated the competition...But i have to admit he is the greatest horse i ever saw in person to this day.

Yeah, she would have hung in there for a lot longer -- especially after a 24 2/5th opening quarter like she posted on the game.

That Preakness field in the game was incredibly tough. A bunch of different horses in that field could have won -- it would have come down to trips obviously.

Afleet Alex certainly wasn't going to blow them away -- he probably would have been 30/1 in the betting for that race. No Giacomo, Closing Arguments, Scrappy T's, Andromedas hero, and Nolan's Cats in there.

Point Given was easily the most impressive Belmont Stakes winner in a long time.

A. P. Indy was a sales topping yearling a very good race horse and a great sire ... but he wasn't beating Point Given in the Belmont imo.

spectacular bid was absolutely that-a spectacular horse. he lost the belmont, and we all know why..and suffered only one loss after, to affirmed. he was the last truly great horse that we've seen. others have had their moments, but when you consider what he did all three years he ran, it's simply amazing. many rank secretariat ahead of him because secretariat had such an astounding triple crown run-but i'd say over all, the bid was better. especially when you consider the ratio of starts to wins/losses.

Not sure if he would have CRUSHED but, I think he would win 9 out of 10.

Secretariat was better than anyone else in the triple crown series. Whirlaway was probably the closest to him over the series. Whirlaway made a pretty decent crop look like Donkeys and he ran very, very fast in the KY Derby.

Count Fleet didn't have much competition and didn't run big until the Belmont, where he ran a giant race and injured himself...never running again.

i believe count fleet won the belmont by 25-the record til secretariat came along. very disappointing that he didn't race after that. no telling what else he would have accomplished.


and i'd have to think war admirals belmont would get a mention as a really good effort-considering he injured himself breaking from the gate. it was a bad enough injury that they thought he might have to be retired.

Couldn't they at least have watched a single race to figure out the correct silks colors for Cash is King and Afleet Alex?
