Oaks/Derby Daily Double

One of my favorite bets is the oaks/derby doulble. This year I think I have a lock.
On Fire Baby/Gemologist

I'll book that right now.

I've hit this in something like 5 of the last 10, mostly by wheeling a couple Oaks contenders over several Derby contenders. The bad part is that the ticket is usually buried and forgotten until sometime Sunday morning and I have to mail it back to CD.

Can anyone tell me if they are still going to have the 2 day pick three?

On Fire Baby/Mark Valeski

The best way to play this bet is usually to wait until Bogey posts his ticket & then just copy it exactly. If memory serves, he dominates this particular wager.

I liked her, but they seemed to shift gears quickly. One minute they were dead set on running her in the Derby, then they skip her last prep and announce the Oaks is the target. Either they got their heads on straight, or something is amiss.

No prep at all though? They skipped the Fairgrounds and Oaklawn 3yr old filly races.

we just had the feeling that she ran pretty hard in Arkansas,” said Fort of Mamma Kimbo’s 1 1/4-length victory in the April 11 Fantasy Stakes (gr. II) at Oaklawn Park. “When you start running horses three weeks apart, it catches up to them. She also doesn’t have a huge foundation; she only has two races.”

Prior to the Fantasy, the Bob Baffert-trained Mamma Kimbo broke her maiden by 5 1/4 lengths at Santa Anita Park Feb. 18. Bred in Kentucky by William Betz, Dr. Chuck Kidder, and Wayne Masterman, Mamma Kimbo is by Discreet Cat , out of the Devil’s Bag mare Bag Lady Jane.
so, she ran 2/18, and then 4/11. he mentions that racing catches up to them as a reason not to run, and then says she hasn't got much foundation.
that's a lot of trainer-speak there. it would be her third race of the year, but he's worried that over-racing would catch up to her?? lol yeah, that doesn't look as tho it'd be an issue.

sounds to me that she hasn't rebounded from a tough effort quickly enough. why not just say that??

pointman 04-26-2012 03:28 PM

Or is it possible Mr. Fort that asking the horse for maximum efforts without racing them enough to build a foundation is what catches up to them?

How much do you guys usually invest? I am not one who plays doubles on a regular basis because I don't feel they are worth it, but the oaks/derby double is always a different case. I was thinking about going all in the oaks to gemologist, 24 or 48 dollar play, do you think that's worth it? or more of a 5 horses in the oaks to 3 horses in the derby kinda deal?

I have read.... Kentucky Derby, Arkansas Derby.... Then the race Mambo Kimbo won. Thats 3 plans, and none of them are happening. She can beat me. Plus its not like shes better anyway.... Its not like shes some monster Im trying to make a case against. At best she fits with like 5 other in the race.
