"Violence Against Women" reauthorization now has enough votes

Good news

Quote:

The newly politicized fight to reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act for the third time may have reached a tipping point. With the cosponsorship of Nevada Republican Sen. Dean Heller, there are now 60 cosponsors, enough to overcome a filibuster if they all actually vote for the bill.

Heller joins Idaho's Mike Crapo, an author of the bill, Maine's Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins, Alaska's Lisa Murkowski, Massachusetts' Scott Brown, and Illinois' Mark Kirk as a Republican supporting reauthorization. Vermont Democratic Sen. Patrick Leahy, the bill's other author, notes that "Fewer than a dozen bills introduced in the United States Senate this Congress have amassed 60 or more cosponsors."
Note: my attention to this domestic policy continuing to protect women in no way reflects any ignoring, on my part, of other violence against women elsewhere in the world. So suck it, Dell.

America should be ashamed we are giving away money to countries like Pakistan.

At least 943 Pakistani women and girls were murdered last year for allegedly defaming their family’s honor, the country’s leading human rights group said Thursday.

The statistics highlight the growing scale of violence suffered by many women in conservative Muslim Pakistan, where they are frequently treated as second-class citizens and there is no law against domestic violence.

“At least 943 women were killed in the name of honor, of which 93 were minors,” wrote the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan in its annual report.

Some victims were raped or gang raped before being killed, the Commission said. Most of the women were killed by their brothers and husbands.

Only 20 of 943 killed were reported to have been provided medical aid before they died, the Commission wrote.
Let's just ignore the rest of the world's women and focus on abortion and birth control in the U.S.A.!

Absolutely Sickening

Come on Dell, we are big boys and girls here, we can look at more than one issue or set of circumstances at a time. If I ruled the world, every woman in every nation would have equal rights and these criminal acts would be a thing of the past...but I don't! All I can do, all any of us can do is speak out against them, but that doesn't mean we must be silent about other issues.

Sometimes I feel like I'm the only one doing so. Certainly a government that gives financial support in the billions per year isn't doing any speaking out.

We currently have a President who praises the great accomplishments of the muslim world yet ignores the mistreatment, actually supports the mistreatment of their women by continuing to let the money train run.

We can and certainly should do much more!

I agree completely and the fact that both parties lack the political and moral will to do so is shameful.
