Oaklawn 2nd

Am I seeing things or did the rider of the 8 stop riding midstretch and then resume only to get beat narrowly?

Seems like he thought the wire for the mile races was the finish line.

In your case couldn't it be both?:zz:

You're trying too hard.

cmorioles 02-12-2012 02:41 PM

He clearly stopped riding.

Given the rider in question, I'm hardly surprised and yes, I agree that he did think it was a first line finish. They used to use the first line finish in 5.5f races at OP that started at the 3/4 pole, but Laviolette was nowhere near OP at that point.

Why/When did they stop?

pointman 02-13-2012 11:02 AM

Isn't there a big green light or something that is put on the pole when the alternate finish line is used? Might have been a clue as to which finish line was in use during the race.

I don't remember when they stopped, but the why would be to give a longer run into the turn.

and it's a one mile track. how hard is it to remember it's one lap?

Because they use two finish lines. A "main finish line" and the "1 mile finish line", see below link. The race was 6f and therefore was ending at the main finish line. The jock stood up at the 1 mile finish line instead of riding to the main finish line.

Didn't play yesterday, who was the jock?

Any word on if Oaklawn is reviewing it at all?

At the least he should be sat down for a few days.

oh, in hoss's original post i thought he said it was a mile race.
i know they use more than one finish line-it's nothing new, so you'd think the jocks would be aware of where races end.

Too bad for hin Wallace wasn't still announcing because when he didn't hear the ever present scream, " and they turn into the short stretch of the mile run" he would have realized he needed to keep riding.:D

I would have to imagine that a suspension is a given considering how many bettors he screwed with such a lapse of judgment. There is absolutely no excuse for not knowing which finish line is in use. Even if he forgot during the race he should have been able to tell just by looking at the pole.
