'Luck' gains momentum. Milch on NPR. Beyer gushes.
is this series on h b o based on any truth ?is it fiction or non fiction?i didnt get to see the sneak episode
thanks |
It's loosely based on Steve Byk's life.
Loosely. |
The characters are composites of individuals around the racetrack that script writers David Milch, John Perrotta, Jay Hovdey and others know and have known in their decades around the game. The storylines are constructed similarly.
Some of the principals that are going to be instantly identifiable include the trainer Turo Escalante (based on Julio Canani) and Ace Bernstein (loosely a blend of legendary Lou Wolfson and First Jersey Securities/Due Process Stables empresario Bob Brennan). |

Sports Illustrated's Tim Layden lauds 'Luck' in review:
A Dark Horse Winner HBO's new series Luck captures the not-so-pretty reality of racing Racing fans won't feel cheated out of any authenticity; in fact the language is often so esoteric that outsiders might occasionally get lost. |

They need to create a flamboyant Southern California trainer who ships horses in from time to time. Preferably the character would have long blonde or grey hair and wear sunglasses most of the time due to Steve Buscemi eyes.
He would essentially be Rain Man's nemesis. And Dennis Farina would moon him and whatnot. |
Sounds like Milch is on NPR's "Fresh Air" today. Heard a commercial for it this morning...check your local listings.
|
Looking forward to Sunday its going to be fun. I dont need it to be factually perfect. If I want expert racing analysis I can tune in to Talking Horses or read an article written by Crist. I want to be entertained in a genre I love period. I have a feeling it will be great.
On a side note STILL no Luck merchandise is available at HBO..Maybe in a week |

David Milch on NPR's "Fresh Air" right now
David Milch is on Fresh Air.

Milch says the term "bug" originated because the asterisk next to the jockey's name in DRF looks like a bug. Never heard that before.

Another warm, admiring review, this one from the Times' highly regarded David Carr: HBO Bets on Two Thoroughbreds

I will be at the premier tomorrow night at Mandaly Bay. Hoffman, Nolte, Farina ("Serrano"s got the discs") etc will be there. Can't wait!
