I rode Hank the pony a few times last summer though never in a race.

That was very helpful and I thank you for your time.

Now... can anyone actually answer the question for me?

Thank you!

edit - Okay how about this... what is the highest weight that could conceivably be given these days?

Port Conway Lane 01-18-2012 07:37 PM

My guess is Nathan's HQ at 131.

Thank you.

(That was a sad race).

Is that an ultra high number?

I'm asking because I know a lot of you don't follow NZ racing but there's a horse, Mufhasa, champion and multiple G1 winner (maybe 8 off the top of my head? I'd have to ask ed), horse of the year... anyway he's just been assigned 61 kg which (I had to look it up) is roughly 134 (and a half) pounds.

I realize this is a LOT but I wanted to know by how much and how it looks compared to here (that sounded illiterate).

It all depends on the competition.
Zenyatta carried 129 in the Vanity 2 years ago against inferior competition and I would think Havre De Grace or Rapid Redux ran in handicaps last year under similar circumstances. These days I would guess 129 would be the top weight most trainers would run their horses.

Low number for the Fall Highweight. I haven't followed the race weights for years but 136 was typical 15-20 years ago.

I can sum up all I know about weights in one sentence... they used to be higher. That's it so thanks.

He's a classy old man. Tough field but he IS the class of the field.

His connections aren't sure they're running him as he also drew barrier 16.

He's won this race twice before so it's not like he has anything to prove.

I just wondered and appreciate your answers.

Interesting... thank you!

The 61 kg horse, Mufhasa, is scratched. (Yea).

(Just to update this).

Was just watching the 2nd today at Aqueduct and this thread came to mind as Royal Currier won carrying 130 lbs, giving 11 lbs to eventual third place finisher Starforaday and 14 lbs to the rest of the field.

AQU 2nd Starter Handicap

Only if I can also send the clip from ATR where Steve said they shouldn't complain about weight since HDG has no trouble carrying Larry's "fat, cowboy ass" around.

:D

Indeed. That was classic stuff. I wondered what might be said if/when Larry Jones is next on ATR. :D

How about 142? There are odd special races every once in awhile with international jockeys or retired jockeys where they make the horses lug around a bunch of weight.

Linny 03-28-2012 02:53 PM

Steeplechasers regularly carry over 165, over a distance but not at such high speeds. Isn't She Grand won a starter a few weeks ago under 131. Judicial Leader won undr 126 a few weeks prior.

On Monday Raise the Reward won under 126, going 12 furlongs...wait for it... at....BEULAH. http://www.equibase.com/static/chart...U032612USA.pdf

Calzone Lord 03-28-2012 07:20 PM

They have races in Pennsylvania that are restricted to amature jockeys -- horses carry up to 154 lbs in them.

If I recall, I think one of Cannon Shell's horses might have run in one of them on the turf at Penn National a year or two ago.

Calzone Lord 03-28-2012 07:28 PM

Here's one where they made a horse a 20-cent on a dollar favorite in one of these races ... ended up finishing 2nd.

http://www.equibase.com/premium/eqbP...AY=D&STYLE=EQB

4th place carried top weight at 152lbs.
