Really?

I'd rather send a mare to Street Cry at that price level, but who knows.

Standard MO - sign an astounding book of mares first season, produce some serviceable runners, and jack the rate in time for the smaller breeders with crappier mares to over pay for services.

I'd hope no one really pays even close to half of that number.

Tapit stands at Gainesway.

Not sure what that has to do with Winstar's roster.

Bernardini's book has been dominated by Sheik Mo mares from the start. They will have no problem getting that fee from the limited number of breeders that have mares that can justify a 150k stud fee. The fact is he had 3 top class 3yo's this year with Stay Thirsty, To Honor and Serve and Wilburn. Those are the kind of horses that ultimately the biggest spenders are looking for and are willing to pay to buy. His averages this year are strong, weanlings avg 275k (none bought by SM), yearlings went for 327k (SM bought a bunch), 2yo's avg 272k (SM bought none) and mares covered by him averaged 872k (one horses did throw things off kilter by selling for 4 million though the median was 380k)

At those numbers and knowing SM will pay big money for a good yearling more or less justifies the decision.

Yeah, you have valid points, but I gotta believe those numbers are going to start falling when people realize his progeny really aren't that great (so far) and have accomplished what they have thus far against a really bad crop.

Thanks, fixed. I swear the link I had was the right one. I read the Tapit article, cut and pasted the url. Dunno what happened.

Not in the short term they wont. Repole, Webber, Stonestreet are 3 of the biggest purchasers of yearlings and all got Breeders Cup horses out of his 1st crop. I'm sure they will be looking hard at getting more plus you know the arabs will continue to buy the ones they deem the best. The thing is that the good ones are colts who produce in the big 3 yo races. Those are what drives the market.

Perhaps you dont realize this but the word "bad crop" doesn't exist in Lexington, KY.

Cannon Shell 11-11-2011 05:33 PM

The real question is Girolama at 15k in NY.

Then there's the fact that Bernardini and Zenyatta knew each other in the biblical sense so we have that bundle of goldspun joy to look forward to, aka the 2015 Triple Crown winner per the Z fan boards (I actually haven't been to them, but we all know that's one thing they say). You've also got her half-sis Eblouissante by Bernardini. They seem optimistic that he fits well with that family.

Knowing that there is a strong chance that Sh Mo will be looking at your Bernardini baby as a yearling is alot of added value. At the sales every one chatters and people know who the "big buyers" are checking out. Even if he doesn't buy him Sh. Mo ads a bit of interest to your youngster. he has most certainly supported Bernardini and one presumes he will continue to do so.

seeing as many of her fans thought she could win the tc at six, should they enter her, i don't know that we have to worry about them going on and on about the offspring. other than it's 'soo pretty' of course!
