Is there a law against it?

As long as the guy obeys the laws of the land and pays his taxes, who cares what language he speaks?

Millions of Italians, Jews, Eastern Europeans, Russians, etc., have come here and done ok for themselves and others without ever speaking English.

Who cares?

It doesn't bother me if he's speaking spanish with family or friends but before the Texas senate speak in English if you've been here over 20 years.

As long as he got the message across I don't care if he spoke in Martian, the need of this Texas Senator to interrupt his testimony says much more about the "good Senator" than anyone else, and speaks to the underlying racism that is in play here.

Man doesn't sound like a moron, there is no official language in the US so no rule that he had to testify in English, I fail to see the Senator's problem, how was this "insulting"? Is he saying that only English speaking Americans have a right to be heard by their elected officials? Perhaps they also must be of a certain religion, color etc...

Speaking espanol doesn't make you a moron.

Speaking it to a primarily english-only understanding crowd while possessing the ability to speak english makes you a moron. Especially when you consider the point he was trying to make.

And you would have a point IF he hadn't brought along a translator! So...tell me again what point the Senator was making (other than demonstrating his own arrogance)?

not offended coach. by dell's post or yours. bashing someone for not speaking english doesn't affect me directly. and it has the nice side effect of pushing those who might not agree with everything they stand for to vote democratic anyway. republican's can write off reagan's home state largely thanks to a few decades of immigrant bashing. look for that to happen to the rest of the southwest (texas included) in the next decade if republican's stay the course.

Hispanics are the fastest growing American demographic, and the GOP knows it. Whites are a minority by 2030? 2050? (I forget). That's one of the reasons why the Repubs are so desperately trying to implement their voter suppression laws before the 2012 elections. Strong numbers in voter turnout doesn't favor electing Republicans, and the demographics are moving further and further away from the GOP daily.

So not only is the GOP moving so far to the right they have already disenfranchised a significant number of formerly reliable GOP voters, their target audience is shrinking massively and quickly. There's a void and a need there, but it's not for the current GOP, certainly not the evangelicals or the "Tea Party", nor is it markedly progressive. It's about where Obama is.

Yeah and they don't like abortions. Things will remain the same on social issues and we'll keep electing the usual suspects.
