President Obama skipped the events of National Police Week in D.C. this week, instead hosting a controversial rapper at the White House who has praised a convicted cop killer.

On Wednesday, the White House hosted a poetry night with a performance from Common, author of the work, "A song for Assata," in dedication to Black Panther Assata Shakur, who was convicted for the 1973 slaying of New Jersey Trooper Werner Foerster.

Earlier in the week, Fraternal Order of Police National President Chuck Canterbury sent a letter expressing his "profound disappointment" with the invitation and followed it up with a phone call reminding President Obama's staff that National Police Week is "a time to honor law-enforcement officers for their service and sacrifice."

Obama did not attend the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund's candlelight vigil Friday evening. He also skipped the Peace Officer's Memorial Service on Sunday on the West Front of the U.S. Capitol. President George W. Bush attended the Peace Officer's Memorial every year except one.

President Obama spoke at the National Peace Officer's Memorial in 2010.

Well, only Faux News found "controversy" there. Didn't you watch Bill O'Reilly last night? That has been disproven as an exaggeration. Oh - Common has also rapped about anti-violence, anti-guns, anti-gangs, and is profoundly anti-abortion (and has rapped about that, too)

I don't watch the news.

I was told this by a few members of the illustrious police force, who are quite close friends to former Congressman and Sheriff Brad Ellsworth.

I don't think anything is wrong with Common and expected Obama to be a big fan as they have much in common.

Instead of Fox or Huffington telling you who Common is and what he stands for just simply watch Common and decide for yourself.

Jesus. Common is one of the least controversial rappers in history. The dude was in this and GAP commercials FFS. FOX News has praised him over and over again for being a 'conscious' and 'responsible' rapper before they decided that they hated him and he was a cop killing radical. Enough with the fake outrage.

Agreed! I'm not a fan of rap music and, perhaps it's my age, never understood it's appeal to folks outside inner cities. Everything I've read about Common indicates to me he's a good guy and a decent role model, this "outrage" is a sign of the times...folks who disagree with President Obama's politics are no longer satisfied with merely disagreeing with him, they feel compelled to demonize him....some cases, it's racial, other times merely the political reality of a mass media culture.

People on the far right and far left enjoy making the biggest deals out of some things that dont even need a second thought.
