B. Wayne Hughes' Don't Get Mad won the Derby Trial off a poor Santa Anita Derby effort and was able to get into the Kentucky Derby field a week later. He also looked liked a late-running miler-type, and proved to be so later on, but he did run a good 4th in the Derby.
Of course, that was the year Giacomo won, and besides that plodder and Don't Get Mad, sucker horses Wilko and Andromeda's Hero were also seen to be passing horses down the stretch.
Not sure if there is going to be a massive pace meltdown this year, although it's sure to be a staggerfest regardless of the pace, given the field lining up.
