3/13: Santa Anita ($135k C/O)

Utterly disgusted having written and lost extensive recap of Saturday's action. Here's the Cliff Notes version...
  • Uncle Mo's performance was far from great no matter how fast he came home or well he galloped out, and what he gets out of this artificial event is dubious..

  • The Tampa Bay Derby while fun for those that caught the crazy mutuels, was a complete embarrassment for any serious-minded wannabes, and returns the race for now to its' modest roots as a largely forgettable outpost on the Derby Trail...

  • Premier Pegasus certainly got a dream set up, but Alonso Quinonez and the colt took advantage brilliantly in their first try around two turns. The Myung Kwon Cho homebred was the saving grace on an otherwise bad day for the sophomore crop...

Good day overall at the windows Saturday with $274 Oaklawn P4 covering the other quad tries, and a gaggle of triple hits producing a positive bankroll boost. Hope you did well! $135k Santa Anita carryover the focus today...

Don't forget that SA has a 50 cent P4. Either spread more or hit it twice just in case the $1 one is a signer.

Waiting for scratches Dave. Depending on what occurs, may adjust away from the single of Coo Choo in P4 and go .50 with slightly altered play.

BOL today!

I thought the same thing last year when Satish won, and Super Saver ran 3rd. Trainers try, that's all they can do. As for the winner, nice job. If you have her on the show, hope she didn't read this.;)

I know what you mean... It's a response to what we saw out there in this specific running. It doesn't take away from O'Connell's accomplishment of being in position to win a G2 race. Certainly the winner, and any of them who should somehow advance to the bigger stages ahead, will have to improve 15 lengths or more to compete seriously with whatever sophomores that are out there that may be any good at all.

This is kind of a knee-jerk reaction to a poor running of the race. The Tampa Derby, and the Sam Davis, have probably improved their respective standings on the Derby trail over the last few years more than any other races in the spring. It has included two Derby winners from the last four runnings, more than the Blue Grass, Wood, SA Derby, Ill Derby, and Arkansas Derby combined.

We all knew it was a weak field, the favorite included, but remember that the TB Derby at this point is a "penultimate prep" type of race, so it generally features horses that are still looking to prove themselves worthy of being in the Derby conversation.

Uh huh... And as a poor running, it 'returns the race for now to its' modest roots as a largely forgettable outpost on the Derby Trail.'

It felt a little more like you were referring to its general place on the trail. If you're referring to this specific running only, then of course I agree. Although if Cathy and Bob Zollars buy Watch Me Go can't he become a late season 'Derby' horse?

PValue! Now THAT was a good end to a fun couple of racedays... Hope everybody had a good weekend..
