Improved TRPB tote protocol/security green-lighted

Congratulations to Chris Scherf and TRPB for following through on the opportunity to improve the tote system and its' integrity. They've been working on these difficult issues for a long time, and it shows that there are industry leaders trying to address the problems.

Tote Program Includes Pari-Mutuel Upgrades
By Blood-Horse Staff

The Thoroughbred Racing Protective Bureau in the next one to two years plans to launch a tote security system designed to close pools on time, eliminate shifts in odds, and display decimal rather than fractional odds. The system has been in the works for years.

The TRA and TRBP said the system will:
  • provide real-time decimal odds, initially in the win pool, which will provide more timely and accurate information for bettors to calculate expected payouts;

  • an improved, standardized stop-betting device and process, which will ensure betting has ceased at every retail network on the TRPB Tote Security System at the start of every race upon the stop betting command being issued by the host;

  • the ability for a host racetrack to identify and authenticate each simulcast retailer’s participation in the host’s races, ensuring only authorized access to pools;

  • the ability for a host racetrack to verify essential control functions occurring within the host’s network, such as pool participation, ITSP information, cancel delay time, currency, and minimum bet values;

  • the ability for a host racetrack to audit wagering transaction detail on multi-leg pools on a leg-by-leg basis;

  • and increased capability for participating host racetracks to hasten development of new wagering opportunities and expand betting markets.

Realtime would be nice....for a change.

I'm very pleased with these changes, but why did it take this long to get around to doing what should have been done years ago, and why will it still take a year or 2 longer? What should the average player do in the meantime?

I appreciate the efforts, but the implications of unfair/criminal advantages before/until these changes are obvious, no?

Coordinating the variety of systems involved in this is unimagably complicated.

Steve, I guess it's an out of sight/out of mind kind of thing. Until they announced the changes, the fact that we (the average player) were probably being cheated by the system that is in place was something I didn't think about much. This just brings it back up to the forefront, and it makes me angry.

Chris Scherf on ATR tomorrow at 9:30a to talk about the protocol improvements and security enhancements.

Steve, can you find out why ADW pick 4 wagers don't get co-mingled until after the first leg has been run? This is only a problem when tote issues occur, but it can be a Major problem.

Anytime progress can be marked, it has to be viewed as nothing but positive...

Sure, we all would have liked to have seen (and frankly expected) this years ago, but the fact remains that we have these improvements now, and the game is going to be much improved for it.

Kudos and Gud Jub -
