Machen

3YO colt by Distorted Humor broke his maiden very impressively at Fair Grounds this afternoon (Race 9). He was bet down to 3-1 off of some very strong works and ran a huge race after breaking slowly and advancing on the far turn. A La bred N1X for older horses went a second and a fifth slower 30 minutes before off of a nearly identical half-mile.

His dam, Ready's Gal, broke her maiden at first asking at Saratoga in 2004 and won 7 of 17 lifetime including the Lake George, Matchmaker and Hillsborough.

Not many Neil Howard first timers are bet and run like that.

Would have thought the turf. Didn't Ready's Gal beat Wait it Out in the Lake George. There were some decent turf fillies that year.

Neil Howard will visit ATR tomorrow to talk about him... Also eager to ask about AIN'T NO TELLIN', a Sam-Son Dynaformer homebred filly he debuts Thursday who is a half sister of memorable MGSW French Beret.

WOW.
any horse that breaks their maiden before the age of 5 for N. Howard is a serious colt.

Distorted Humor is probably the best debut sire going.

Tomorrow.. Or Thursday. He was tied up until 10:30 and at that point we were booked solid. A bit booked out tomorrow too, so I'm thinking Thursday...

If you missed today, it featured Tony Dutrow, Seth Merrow, Dr. Allday, Andy Serling, Richard Migliore.

Principally Todd Pletcher, Dale Romans & Tony Dutrow. Plus some other old friends like Neil Drysdale and Bill Cesare.

One Derby winner in a row I guess with Super Saver. Think the last before that was FuPeg, though he might have done some work with Monarchos but I'm not positive.

Currently 100-1 at Wynn.

Dahoss 01-05-2011 01:13 AM

I'd like to take him at 100-1 to not be in the race.

We've broached that topic, of which Thoro-Graph's Jerry Brown is a huge proponent, and I don't think Allday has any objection to it. But that concept is a quagmire in that there's generally more than one vet or equine service practitioner working on a given horse at any time.

Esp. at the lower levels.

Also, what do you do about the horses shipping in from off track? Honor system?

It would be a huge expense to police. The cheaters would just find a way around it. They could just use the listed vet for normal day to day activities and when they want to pop one, have Dr. Feelgood make a quick visit. If they're caught, they will have to give their horses to their assistants for 30 days.

Even Howard doubts his distance ability and with that breeding, he will be a stretch to get 9 furlongs.

Neil Howard today on ATR on Machen, Aint No Tellin' and Grasshopper
