Mine that Bird- retired

can they retire D. Wayne at the same time?

note: I do know his name, just a typo...

Why? Amazing how you can make a comment about a Hall Fame trainer that has done incredible good for the sport. Not his fault he was dealt a one horse wonder...

my miss storm cat 11-08-2010 01:28 PM

Bye bye Birdie. :)

You really think the trainer had anything to do with it? Mine that Bird was fried last year after running in races after he had already tailed off after the Triple Crown. You could have picked any trainer in racing to give MTB to and he wouldn't have fired back to his career form. But hey, the guy only almost won the sprint with a 23-1 shot...let him retire though. He's won and forgotten more about training horses than any of us will ever.

D Wayne is high on Dublin for 2011.

FWIW, D Wayne probably wins the Sprint if Pashito The Che breaks alertly and pressures Big Drama, as the race was likely to unfold.

He looks very fit and ready to go. We watched him leaving the Paddock at the BC, and were struck by how good he appeared, and for a brief moment thought he might show some spark.

I hope he eventually finds his way to the KHP. So long, MTB.

He was great in the Derby and then the mysteries of horses prevailed .

He can now be called D. Wayne Lukewarm.

Nice post. :tro:

I have to thank you cause I really did want to see this but then got busy, too lazy to look for it, all kinds of excuses.

This horse... it's funny cause I wasn't a fan or anything and sure as hell didn't have him in the Derby but the more time that goes by... he just has this endearing quality.

I wish him a long, happy and healthy life and yes I agree I hope he ends up there.

The biggest upset in Derby history. Bar none.

OldDog 12-02-2010 12:53 PM

He ran a tremendous Derby, a very respectable 2nd to Rachel in the Preakness (a very exciting race), and was a very close 3rd to Dunkirk in the Belmont. Fair to say that had he not been a gelding he may have been retired to stud at 3, and would have garnered more respect and been held in higher esteem, but such was not his fortune. Each time I looked forward to his races this year was ultimately a disappointment. But to watch him in the paddock and in training you'd never know it.

Ain't it the truth. I just feel he has more to offer in some capacity, and hope he gets a chance to shine again.

Great Derby run and one I'll always remember. From last to first, on the rail, in the mud... great stuff.

cakes44 12-02-2010 02:23 PM

He had a better career than the last Derby winner.

I think people are underestimating just how bad D Wayne Lukas is.

Give him to Chip Wooley and I believe he would start hitting the board again in dirt races. But the owners are too blind to see the negative Lukas factor.

Canonero II. Imagine his odds coming in from Venezuela had he not been part of the mutual field.

Funny Cide went to Finger Lakes to find winning form, why doesn't this horse start back at Sunland or Zia Park? Maybe he'll come around enough to head back to the big circuits.

Funny Cide went to Woodbine, too, where this horse won several races at 2.

I'd say Giacomo was still the bigger "upset" in that there were actually a couple horses in the sophomore class of 2005 that ran in the Derby and actually ended up having some talent.

Giacomo was actually one of the winter book favorites for the Derby after his Hollywood Futurity effort.

He wasn't totally hopeless, but from his preps and subsequent career he was basically a bridesmaid.

Mine That Bird and Canonero II were completely illogical.

The day of the race Mine That Bird was available at 200-1 offshore and on Betfair.
