According to this article about Tinners Way being pensioned, Tinners Way is the second best son of Secretariat, behind Risen Star.

I don't know, Tinners Way won a lot more money, but was he really better than General Assembly??

No way, General Assembly was better, and if not for The Bid, he probably would be the best son of Secretariat

He was a marvelous horse....but only a jet engine would have made him better than Risen Star.

Or if they faced off at Saratoga. General Assembly seemed to love it there if I remember correctly.

i loved general assembly, my pick to win the derby that year...we all know how that turned out.

I don't know about that. He won the Hopeful as a huge favorite and that was before Bid came on the scene. In the Travers, he was lone speed, and it was a sloppy track.

He was a tremendous horse. I just think Risen Star was better. I'm not sure Risen Star wasn't one of the better horses I have ever seen. But, he didn't run enough to really know. General Assembly danced a lot of dances and performed well in most of them.

Since we are playing the "If" game, if Eddie D had not taken the overland route in the Derby, Risen Star probably would have been a Triple Crown winner.

In a fairly run race, I'm not sure Risen Star would have beaten Winning Colors in the Preakness.

That race was definitely set up for him as Forty Niner was on a suicide mission to make sure Winning Colors didn't win. The Gene Klein-Gary Stevens vs Woody Stephens feud was not something you often see in racing. Gary Stevens calling Woody a bitter old man. Woody referring to Stevens as a boy and Gene Klein as crying Klein. It was pretty funny.

Woody should have been forced into retirement after that debacle.

He was a jealous bitter old man.

I agree that Risen Star was superior to General Assembly, I was just trying to level the playing field a little. I do remember Leroy Jolley joking that he was in favor of year round racing at Saratoga for him.

General Assembly was my pick that year, too.


Just to clarify on an earlier post I might have misinterpreted, Spectacular Bid was not a son or grandson of Secretariat.


That said, I cherish Spectacular Bid's Florida Derby that I saw from the track apron at the finish line.

That finish line win is one of the photos on the wall of this sports viewing room.

The greatest example of a horse pulling a jockey to victory that I have ever seen in my years of racing fandom.
