I'm not sure what to say...

hockey2315 09-01-2010 10:25 AM

I saw the Parx thing on their track feed the other day and was wondering what it was. . . Very catchy  .

Antitrust32 09-01-2010 10:26 AM

huh, Parx.

sounds pretty terrible!

Antitrust32 09-01-2010 10:27 AM

Parx your ass in the seats!

It was the name of the casino that is in front of the grandstand.

Say what you want about it, but the Penn racing program is probably the best in the country for the middle level owners and below, ESPECIALLY if you have a PA bred.

Coach Pants 09-01-2010 10:51 AM

It's aggravating.

I'm sure mediocre human athletes would love to compete for super-inflated purses in restricted competitions.

See how insane this business model is?

Why is it aggravating? From a handicapping perspective?

The competition is horrible there, if I see a horse ship out of PHA, he is automatically downgraded in my opinion, but from the ownership and training perspective, people actually have a chance to pay their bills, unless Juan Carlos Guerrero is in your race, and even then, running 2nd in any of these purses and you pay for your horse that month.

Actually agree with this, as we have some horses out of Philly, and it works, especially with a PA-bred. We have a 2YO PA-bred who hasn't run yet, but you win a MSW, for a 45K purse, we also get the 40% PA-bred bonus, then if we are lucky enough to say win a MSW and NW1X, we are out for like the next 2 years in the black.

And don't get me started on Juan Carlos Guerrero, one of the biggest cheats in the country and easily the biggest cheat at Philadelphia not named McCaslin/Vayders/Auwarter. Guerrero is worse than them, worse than Lake, worse than everyone. He's improving horses at super-trainer ala Marty Wolfson levels at Philly. He's such a cheat, it's a joke.

I can't say I see the logic in this.

Unless you're reffering specifically to PA bred races. Some of them bottom level and mid level open claiming races at Philly Park tend to be brutally tough races.

  1. welfare for horsemen
  2. the majority of slot money goes to home-bred program
  3. home-breds suck a.ss
  4. doesn't solve the problem of poor track management
  5. testing is pathetic in most slot states
  6. puts pressure on the states that matter in racing
  7. etc.

I don't disagree about the open races, but when they ship to a place like NY, I downgrade them.

He puts those people to shame, I think I saw him in the winner circle the other day, he looks young, like mid to upper 20's. I am guessing he knows how to use the internet and find all the good stuff.

It's kind of funny the only track to really take a stand against one of the "usual suspects" was Calder when they banned Ziadie. Most other tracks seem to welcome those type of guys with open arms since they fill races...seems like the track could care less what the perception is or how unbelievable their stats get. Just help fill up the cards.

Tough to really accuse these guys without any real evidence. Their horses obviously pass all the testing procedures. On the plus side...I bet they have a bunch of happy owners when they're withdrawing checks from the bookkeeper's office.

Evidence is 50% off the claim and a 50% winning percentage. It isn't like he is dropping them in class.

Philly's testing procedure's are lackluster at best.

Just a question...regardless of the cost, is there a particular type of testing out there that could detect the designer performance enhancers that these guys are suspected of using?

How it already hasn't is laughable. He either has some incriminating pictures of some pretty high up people or he's simply a friggin horse whiperer. Can't even try to get fancy and toss his stock or you're ripping the ticket up and doing the helicopter toss of said ticket.

The irony is that these guys actually depress the number of entries. People simply dont want to run against them and often wind up scratching, making the races even easier. If I were running a racetrack the first thing i would do is call a guy like Guererro in and say thanks for participating, we are not going to take your entries any longer because it is obvious that you are simply too good for our track. You have 24 hours to vacate, thanks for coming. A lot more effective than wasting time and money (though only about 2% of the time and money needed is being spent) chasing the newest hop.

The guy in charge of a racetrack is supposed to try to field competitive racing with good field size and quality that fits the purse structure. Guys like FCC or trainers like the usual suspects harm a racetracks business though most track execs don't seem to have any clue that this is so. I'm sure that we would get sued a few times but the track would almost certainly win.

I'm sure that this would piss some trainers/owners off but the vast majority of other owners, trainers, fans/gamblers, etc, would find a much better game without them. Of course this will never happen. Instead we have the geniuses in KY battling over the penalty phase of out of competition testing that will almost assuredly never actually catch anyone.

Just had to do some research on Guerrero...here are some findings...Guerrero is 69 for 160 in 2010 at Philly/Parx.

Highest odds winner in 2010...only 6.80-1, Sheri’s Gold, 1/22/2010. Won a Clm 7500 N3L after an eight race losing streak, all with him as trainer. Imagine winning 69 races and the highest payoff was just under $16.

24 of his 69 winners were at 0.90-1 or lower.

Guerrero...off the claim examples

HIGH WAGER
Claimed 3/21/2010 - $5,000
Won 5/3 for Clm 8000, won 5/25 for Clm 8000, won 6/14 for Clm 5000, won 7/10 for Clm 16000, won 7/20 for Clm 8000 – claimed away
Ran 8/15 at MNR Clm 10000, 7th beaten 19

LONG ISLAND LOUIE

CRACK THE OPUS

AFFLUENT LADY
Won a MSW in Jan 2008 for Ned Allard and was off more than 18 months, returning in October 2009. Was dull sixth in two late 2009 starts. Claimed by Guerrero for $7500 on 12/12/2009, a race she won, so a career mark of 2-0-0 from four starts. Affluent Lady proceeded to win her next two starts off the claim, a ALW 12500s, and ALW42450N1X followed by very close third and two seconds in ALW40-50k-ishN2X, before winning ALW 41710N2X on 5/28/2010, but was dq’d for interference. 7th on the turf in June, a surface never tried, she was 3rd in a 43k N2X and just won on 8/30/2010 by 8 in a CLM 5000. This 7500 claim at the end of 2009 has earned $75k from eight 2010 starts.
- - - - - - -
DETERMINATION
Was 0-for-9 on Feb 20 2010 when claimed for $12,500 in a maiden claimer. Won for $12,500 on 3/29/2010, was second twice at 7500N2L on 5/8 and 5/29, then won 7500 N2L by 6 on 6/15, a 7500 N3L by 6.75 on 7/4, and was claimed when beaten a length in 7500 N4L on 7/27, earning roughly $75k under Guerrero in 2010 with three wins and three seconds. For the new trainer, was fourth beaten ten in a CLM 10000 N4L at Penn National
- - - - - - -
COMET ROAD
Was 8-for-38 lifetime when claimed on 6/15/2009 for $12,500, away from Michael Gill/Anthony Adamo. In eight starts for Guerrero through 7/5/2010, when he was claimed for $12,500, Comet Road won six races, with a second and a fifth. After the claim, he was 4th beaten 4 and 3rd beaten 6.5, just the other day.

I could go on...but I won't
