Del Mar

Extremely disappointed, 3 days 24 races and not one 2yr old Maiden Special Weight race. Where are the baby races?

Smooth Operator 07-18-2010 07:57 PM

Maybe they're finally wising up and doing the right thing … BANNING "BABY RACES".

Horses must be at least three-years-old before they can race

The Triple Crown races are for four-year-olds

No horse can become a stallion till at least age six

Ah … wouldn't it be nice.....................

Guess you didn't read the report that two year olds were less likely to break down then 3+ horses...

No it would be pointless, chase more owners out of the game and be detrimental to the horses themselves.

Other than that it's a fine idea.

Let's temper it a bit then. How about we card only 5F or greater races for 2 year olds. I don't have a problem with 2 year olds running in general. I do have a problem when they run 2F, 4F and 4.5F. These races are a ****in' joke. You have racing secretaries that never bother to mix their distances (5f, 5.5f. 6f, 6.5f, 7f, in the sprints, for example) yet they card these sham races.

If they can't get 5F, they should be racing against poodles.

NYRA, at least, to their credit, get this part right.

They usually have the MSW 2 year old races on the weekend. Del Mar is not like Saratoga. They don't have MSW races every day. They just have a couple every weekend.

You mean the 15 races a year run nationwide at these distances are just too much to handle?

I'm sure he'll have at least one in each of the MSW races on opening weekend.

Nationwide? You have any idea how many of these there are between HOL, GG, CD, AP, CRC, WO, etc.?

A lot more than 15. But your point is well taken: run them when they can't get a reasonable distance so that the owners get hooked even more. Why keep them in the barn or on the farm and let them develop to the point when they can actually compete as horses?

Too bad Z didn't start as a baby...................

Yeah there might be 20 or 25 out of how many races run this year? 40000 or 50000?

And yes owners get "hooked" on running horses 4 1/2 furlongs. Turns them into zombies that just start spending more and more.

There are few things in this sport, which is full of bad ideas, that is more idiotic or disproven than the idea that horses shouldnt compete as 2 year olds.

Guys, Charlestown runs 15 4.5f races every week.

I think his point is based just on 2yr olds.
