Best American Races of the Last Century!!!

What were the Best American Horse Races of the last century?

I want your opinions.

smartbid09 06-24-2010 11:27 PM

My Partial list of the greatest american races of the last century

1973 Belmont (Secretariat wins the triple crown by 31 lengths and races into immortality)

1978 Belmont (Affirmed and Alydar's at their best)

1989 Preakness (Sunday Silence and Easy Goer - any one who sees this race will never forget it.)

1978 Marlboro Cup (Slew vs. Affirmed in the first ever meeting of triple crown winners)

1973 Marlboro Cup (Secretariat defeats an all-star field in a still standing world record time!)

1938 Pimlico Special (Seabiscuit vs. War Admiral Match race)

1981 Arlington Million (John Henry shows his heart and determination against the Bart in a race for the ages!)

1984 Breeders Cup Classic

1982 Hollywood Lassie (Landaluce's Wins by 21 lengths)

1991 Breeders' Cup Juvenile

1989 Breeders Cup Classic (HOY honors on the line Sunday Silence beats Easy Goer)

1990 Breeders Cup Distaff (Before Go For Wand broke down this race was truly epic - to this day no one can guess who would have won the race)

1987 Breeders' Cup Classic

1967 Woodward Stakes (To some this is considered the race of the century Damascus took home HOY honors for this win)

1962 Travers Stakes (Jaipur vs. Ridan)

1973 Kentucky Derby

1973 Preakness Stakes

1975 Marlboro Cup (Wajima & Forego)

1976 Marlboro Cup (Forego's Greatest Race)

1978 Jockey Club Gold Cup (Seattle Slew's Greatest Race)

1979 Jockey Cub Gold Cup (Affirmed vs. Spectacular Bid)

1977 Laurel Futurity (Race for the 2-year-old title - Affirmed won)

1988 Breeders Cup Distaff

1973 Whitney Stakes (Onion beats Secretariat in an upset for the ages)

1980 Strub Stakes (Spectacular Bid World Record Time)

1996 Dubai World Cup (Cigar's Defining Moment)

1976 Champagne Stakes (Seattle Slew's finest race at 2)

1978 Travers Stakes (Last meeting between Affirmed and Alydar - this is one of the most famous DQ's in racing history)

These are the ones that came to me off the top of my head but there is many more!

One of the best editions of the Preakness involving these two.

I really enjoyed that race personally. If he's basing his list off what he's witnessed, than I can agree with that pick.

I though Artax's BC Sprint was awesome, Point Given's Belmont..

Zenyatta's Vanity.

I wasn't knocking the race at all.. It's a favorite of mine.. I might have enjoyed it a little more had Behrens won it though.

wasn't it cesario who virtually bolted before the race and then came out and won the american oaks, setting a new stakes record? i thought she was impressive there.

There have been so many races at the Spa that I have enjoyed.

A few summers ago.. the summer of the 2 year olds, there were some awesome maiden races (Indian Blessing and Miamonades in particular) that were a joy to watch.

DrugS brought up Harmony Lodge, and a few of her wins at Toga were awesome to me.

Even Bernardini's Jim Dandy was spectacular in my eyes.. I was standing right on the rail and the jockey completely still and Bernardini was just a beautiful runner.

I really wish I would have been there for Rachels Woodward.. I felt the energy just watching it on tv..
