Shout out for Tony Black!!!

Tony, congratulations on 40 years as a rider, and your many thousands of victories and the thrilling moments you've given the racing fan.

Tony won on "Stand By Me" 40 years ago today, as Steve found out on Thursday's show.

'Stand by Me' was added as Tony's music 4 years ago when I asked him about that first win which I had discovered in the American Racing Manual. He's a marvel. 5,200+ wins. 20th winningest rider in history.

I'm still trying to figure out how he blew that Stallion Stake at Saratoga a few years back on that Jimmy Jerkens 7:1 shot. At least I got to relive it 1000 times in that Karakorum ad.

randallscott35 06-15-2010 02:13 PM

Do the Karakorum people understand just how annoying it is that they put that name on every horse? I wouldn't invest with them just for that. Do it like West Point. Jeez

What is his appeal? I don't get it. Every time I hear him on the radio it's the most depressing story ever. Do people like crying or something?

Coach Pants 06-15-2010 03:18 PM

Yeah well it's not like he's the only jockey to do so. I just find his weekly segment to be too depressing for radio.

 he talked about the exercise rider who died two weeks ago, other than that don't know what's so "depressing" about him

I don't listen every week but the numerous times I have he seems like the most depressed guy on the planet.

And really people who reminisce about the good ol' days bore the s.hit out of me.

I agree with that. Man Obama is so boring. I have no idea what people see in him.

Count me among those who really enjoy the Thursday segments with Tony Black. His perspective adds a lot to my enjoyment of racing. And as an old dog I never tire of firsthand old stories.

I like Tony's segments.. Sure beats the hell out of someone telling me about an upside down revenue model 10,000 different times and ways.
