If any track should have it every year (which none should) it should be Belmont Park.

sorry but it should be CD.

no track should have it every year. this is supposed to be a nationwide effort-why should one track, one region, get the races each year?

dalakhani 05-12-2010 07:26 AM

I think Casner makes some pretty valid points. I think they need to hold out on a decision until at least after this year. This will be the first two day event at a big track other than Santa Anita. Its going to be interesting to see how the numbers look.

The international racing community has demonstrated over the last two Breeders’ Cup events that it will bring its best horses to Santa Anita. This is essential to the survival and growth of the event and our worldwide betting pools. We are a global industry, and we have to do everything we can to maintain Breeders’ Cup as the true World Championships. Dubai has made a bold challenge for this title with the establishment of the spectacular Meydan Racecourse. The Dubai Racing Club will continue to expand its product and increase purses. The path Breeders’ Cup chooses will determine whether this challenge is successfully met

Does "expand it's product" mean that Tam Lin will race twice a week instead of just once a week?

But the most compelling reason for making Santa Anita the permanent venue is the sheer survival of Breeders’ Cup as a viable and profitable company for the advancement of our industry. If Breeders’ Cup is unable to sustain itself and ultimately grow, it will certainly insure the continued decline of Thoroughbred racing in North America. Companies blind to the evolving landscape of their markets and paralyzed by fear of change are destined for decline and failure. The ability to grow purses or even maintain the current level will be extremely difficult, if not impossible, with the current model and industry economics

Yep without the BC Cup purses will have to decline..lol How did this guy get so wealthy? Gene lottery?

Agree. Give fans from all parts of the country an opportunity to attend with reasonable travel. If you hold it at any site permanently, particularly either coast, you eliminate a lot of fans from being able to attend every few years.

Unless you want to create a new race surface category, you have no business running on synthetic surfaces anyway. Calling a race the "Dirt Mile" on Pro-Ride, Polytrack, Cushion...whatever, it's a joke and you often have results that don't reflect the best runners. You might as well run the Classic on turf if you want to say synthetics are the same as dirt.

Even someone who is anti-Dubai cannot deny that World Cup night is far, far more of a World Championship than the Breeders' Cup.

Hey I'm no great Dubai proponent and where they're located geographically is surely quite helpful but they had horses from at least five continents run on World Cup night last year.

If you want to say that the Sheikh is totally over the top and the thing is overblown, I'd agree, but the BC is in no position to dispute with the DRC who hosts a "World Championship."

If Worlds Championship is defined as races with the largest cross section of countries, then Dubai rules the globe.

World Series > World Baseball Championship right? You get the point.

I would think that's what the BC is shooting for, right? I mean they've had increasing global involvement as an initiative for years.

It's certainly a lot easier for Asian and Australian horses to come to Dubai than America and that speaks to the reason why the BC is misguided in that approach. Hell, they're concerned about getting horses from all over the globe and they didn't even have one of the two best horses in training in this country last year!

You think the BC is interested in the Uruaguay champion? If the Uru. champ is any good/great the world's best horse wrangler Gokillthem will buy him and bring the horse were he belongs. You really think the BC wants some 40 claimer from Norway entered in the BC Classic?

As for not getting the best horses. Dirt horses race on dirt, Rubber on Rubber, Turf on Turf, if dirt isnt available were should Rachel have raced? Jockey Gold Cup?

Danzig 05-12-2010 09:58 AM

perhaps the bc should get over their whole 'world championship' bs. it's not the world championships. it's supposed to be a day to showcase the nations breeders by exhibiting their best. if they offer enough money, others will send their best-just like they have in the past.

as for santa anita saying more came then they would have otherwise, that's incorrect. i remember reading comments from overseas connections saying they don't want to come to cali because it's too warm, and their horses are already getting into their winter mode. the bc should pare down their race card, and put the extra purses into the remaining races. that's the draw. not the surface, the location, it's the money!

I think there's a conflict between what you think the BC wants and what I think the BC wants. If they're going to put forth this "International World Championships" agenda then yes, I assume they want international involvement.

If you think that horses coming from Europe for the BC is enough then you must believe they're reaching their potential.
