Upstate Rep. Scott Murphy is pressing Gov. Paterson to expedite the selection of a successor to scandal- scarred AEG to operate 4,500 slot machines at Aqueduct racetrack, saying the future of New York's racing industry is at stake.

Murphy's interest is clear: The historic Saratoga race course is in his district.

And he says that the loss of hundreds of millions in startup cash from whoever gets the Aqueduct contract -- coupled with the possible shutdown of New York City's OTB operation -- means that the cash-strapped New York Racing Association could run out of money by June 1.


Now as much as horse racing is an important economic resource, if the scandal-prone NYRA were to go under, it would be no tragedy.

The Post should realize that the present NYRA is not the same entity in reality as the one that had problems a few years ago. The process of the three man committee is probably unconstitutional, but it is incredible how such a big contract breeds corruption with these pols. They need to have a legitimate bidding process, put the contract to vote and get it done already!

Rep. Murphy turned his back on the constituents of his district, couldn't withstand the heat from Pelosi and voted for that sham of health care bill. His district is infuriated with him and will undoubtedly vote him out next term. This is just a politician trying to save his career and garner more votes. This guys a puppet and everyone knows it. He needs to just go away.

thats just brilliant thinking right there. one guy stands up for horse racing and we are supposed to hate it because he voted the wrong way on something else. go back to the politics forum with the other brain trusts that live there . i go there once in awhile to see what stupidity they are arguing over this week. democrats this and republicans that, i actually go there to laugh at it because its so dumb. the fact is this guy is at least is saying something and trying to put pressure on the governor. i love horse racing and could care less about what these fools fight about in washington. oh yeah, i forgot to you people its always the end of the world when one side does something. end days are coming.....lol. guess what this money issue for racing is a REAL crisis and will actually affect people up here. i'll vote for this guy just for trying. i could give a crap about that health care fight,(either way its a big rip off) this actually means something if you love saratoga racecourse and horse racing. no, this guy should not do his job now because he voted on something you did not like. just like i said a brilliant thinker!

Wow dude, take a deep breath it will be ok. Murphy is just spewing hot air and saying whatever he thinks will get him back in the good graces of his constituents. He has no power(lame duck rep. that sold his soul to the devil Pelosi) and there is nothing he can do persuade the outcome of the VLT's. Now if I think he could help id be all for it but he has demonstrated already that he cant be trusted to be the voice of the people he represents. Saratoga will go on with or without this guy, it's "too big to fail."

I am a constintuent and I don't care if it is hot air or not I like what he said and it will have some legs in this area. My opinion, Murphy is better then the person he ran against and the last 2 people who held that seat so if he is a lame duck they will have to find someone good to run against him.

You are exactly the type of person he is targeting. Someone that will believe everything he says. Come back here and post exactly what he did to ensure the VLT's going through, when they finally do. I will guarantee he had nothing to do with it yet all you will remember is, oh hey didnt Rep Murphy say he was pushing this, he must of had something to do with it. Oh Murphy saved the track pffttt, that would be false.

If all he does is put some preasure on the 3 men in a room to finally get something done then that is more then anyone else seems to be willing to do. At least he isn't bowing to the almighty Sheldon Silver like every other Dem in the state.

Nope, he is too busy bowing to Ms. Pelosi. I'm afraid Murph has been exposed (the Health Care flip-flop was just the most recent unveiling, not the first nor will it be the last) for what he is, and soon will be on his way back to Missouri or NYC.
