Harvey Pack always said "Never bet a horse as a favorite when it is doing something for the first time." Too many people forget his favorite maxim when faced with a gaudy speed figure.

Peppi Knows' win at least shows us that Buddy's Saint was running away from a decent horse in the Remsen before he was geared down.

Harvey's adage very true, not sure about Peppi Knows though. 1:47 for 1 1/16 is not exactly blazing . . . .

so true, but why didn't i listen to the "NYRA prattle" he gave out the 4 and i still missed the exacta!!!!!!!!:zz:

Of course that is true, but he wasn't exactly pressed very tough, was tiring late and the 4 didn't need much more ground to get by late. I wouldn't be jumping on this horse next out, particularly if they stretch to 1 1/8.

How could anybody think today's race actually flattered Buddy's Saint?

I made sure I got back from the club I workout at by 1:10pm so I could watch this race live. What a weird race as Eightyfiveinafifty broke a step slow but rushed up to the lead and then bolted.

I heard the horse was cut up is OK but that Jorge Chavez went to the hospital. Was the jock at fault here? Is Chavez OK? He took off the rest of his mounts.

I see that a poster on another thread gave me the answer I was seeking.

I'm surprised no one mentioned Migliore and soon after Cohen's riding tactics going into the first turn.

85ina50 broke very akwardly and Migliore took advantage by coming in several paths to pinch 85ina50 - but the horse pulled Chavez through - at which point Cohen decided to dive in and race ride.

That kind of stuff makes proven and professional speed horses rank - sometimes very rank. I guess when they're not professional and have broken equipment ... it increases the chance of a mental meltdown.

Absolutely awesome race riding by both Migliore and especially Cohen. Had 85ina50 not had broken equipment - he still likely would have performed at his absolute worst because of the start and the race riding of the two jocks going into the turn.

Obviously it makes it much worse.

Good observations about the potential hazards of an inside post , especially for a young speedster if the start is blown. NYRA said Chavez agent said the bit broke before the bolt.

As an aside, I am enjoying the rather detailed footnotes to the Aqueduct inner charts. Who writes the footnotes ?

I guess he ended up jumping a fence or two after leaving Chop Chop in a heap on the turn. he ran back to the barn. Between Cohen and this colt, Contesssa's blood pressure muct be through tthe roof.

Peppi Knows hardly made Buddy's Saint look like a Derby colt today.
