I bought Direct TV for my dad years ago so he could watch the Red Sox out of market games before MLB offered virtually game of every team. We had the subscription for 10 years so when he died there was no violation of contract or early termination issue.

For the next two years Direct TV processed bad credit complaints to try and squeeze a few bucks out of dead old man's estate. We canceled every Direct TV account in the family. These guys are the lowest of low and do not deserve any of our business for anything.

I had DirecTV for over 10 years. Just cancelled this fall and went with Verizon Fios to get HRTV.

I never had an issue with them and when I cancelled, I had no fees or problems. I just had to dodge the girl that kept asking why I was cancelling. I didn't want to tell her we were going with a different service because I knew that would set off the offers and the badmouthing of the new company. I just told her we were no longer going to watch TV. :)

i read about this yesterday. just proves the saying if it sounds too good to be true...i have dish and love it, no complaints. dtv has tried to get us back for years, but they can't provide our locals that we have with dish, so no go.

I/C,

No.. just cable. Very happy with the digital service with Time Warner Cable up here. The Capital OTB-TV coverage is terrific and with Xpressbet video and now HRTV.com, there's no need for a dish at all for either race network.

I actually got Direct originally for Eagles games, but they were on regular TV so often I dumped it. As Mike says, they then called like pit bulls trying to get me to re-subscribe.

I just signed up or HRTV.com. They are offering a special 12 months for 49 bucks...

Speaking of which. I recently became a customer of Ooma, which is a VOIP phone based service, like Vonage.

One feature I really love is the ability to blacklist callers. They have a personal blacklist feature, which enables you to add any unwanted caller you've had to a list which prohibits that caller from reaching you. Now when I get a repeat call, these callers get a "this number is no longer in service" type message and I never know if they are calling or not! You can also choose other options instead of the disconnected message. The phone can ring on their end forever, or you can have a message saying that they are blocked, etc.

When enough users have blacklisted someone, such as a telemarketer, it goes into a community blacklist (which is optional to use), which really has cut down the crap phone calls tremendously.

I really love telling these callers that I'm really interested in what they have to say but I am running right out the door and that they should call me back tomorrow. I then add them to the blacklist, and voila!, problem solved. I don't get that spiel about why I should reconsider this, or sign up for that.

I didn't even realize that you could get HRTV with Verizon Fios. For years you had to have Dish Networks to get HRTV. I might have to look into getting Verizon Fios.

I have Time Warner Digitial Cable right now. Do any of you have an opinion as to which is better between Time Warner and Verizon Fios? Having HRTV would certainly be a plus.

Coach Pants 12-20-2009 10:07 PM

I don't have a problem with them. It might be because I can read.

SOREHOOF 12-20-2009 11:13 PM

I've had Time Warner for years. They have been great. You have to subscribe to hrtvlive.com on the web if you want it.

The best thing is to be a "free agent". I had some troubles early on, but once I was out of my contract I had more leverage.

Doesn't it make you long for the days when DTV signals were easily decrypted?

Damn them.

Amen - nothing like an XLoder and a bootstrap....good old days :p

I subscribed to Dish for three years, then switched to Directv when I moved. I kept Directv for six years, but switched back to Dish last summer because I needed some free wiring done to a room that I added to my house. Directv was always trying to pull fast ones to get me to sign up for a new term. The best was the one they tried right before the Triple Crown began last year. I suddenly lost my local stations, and when I contacted Directv, I was told that I needed new boxes to get my local stations, which of course meant signing up for a term. I told them no thanks. Normally I would not be able to watch the East and West Coast affiliates, but for some reason, I was able to watch the TC races, and only the TC races, on these channels.

You are a real piece of work. Why don't you do what men and old ladies do and save their time and hang up?

because they'll still call back day after day after day and he probably doesn't feel that intrusive marketing is a fundamental human right.
