Bad timing for Herpes outbreak at CRC

With horses having come in from up north already and many more moving to Palm Meadows, Gulfstream, etc., this couldn't happen at a worse time...

Herpes found at Calder
By Mike Welsch

MIAMI - Three barns at Calder Race Course have been placed under quarantine after a horse tested postive Monday for the equine herpesvirus, said track veterinarian Dr. Patty Marquis. The unidentified horse, trained by Bill White, tested positive at the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine in Gainesville. The horse had shown symptoms of neurological illness over the weekend.

Marquis said no horse can ship into Calder for two weeks; horses other than the horses in the quarantined barns can ship out. Quarantined horses cannot race for 21 days or use the starting gate for training. Tampa Bay Downs on Monday said it would not accept any horses to its barn area from Calder. Other trainers housed in the quarantined barns include Phil Combest, Vinnie Blengs, and Roger Laurin.

When is it a good time for a herpes outbreak?!?

Monarchos1 12-01-2009 08:24 AM

Saturday's stakes have already been postponed until Dec. 19, though Calder did not make the formal announcement yesterday. I imagine it will come down in the next hour or two.

MISTERGEE 12-01-2009 10:08 AM

Yes only 10 races on Sat., as opposed to the usual 12-13 and no stakes races

Ain't that the truth. Why I didn't date the girls at Rutgers.

Tampa only has one day of racing over the next two weeks and 10 racing days for the month of December.

If the outbreak stays contained to the quarantined barn and is cleared up within the 21 day timeframe for the quarantine, it will have a minimal effect on the Tampa racing. Once it is verified that the disease is confined to that one barn, Tampa will lift their ban on CRC shippers.

Fourth Calder barn under restriction
By Mike Welsch

http://www.drf.com/news/article/109329.html

MIAMI - Officials at Calder Race Course placed restrictions on a fourth barn on Thursday after a horse from the stable of Henry Suckie exhibited symptoms of a possible neurological disorder earlier that day.

On Monday, Calder placed a quarantine on the barn area and put restrictions on three of its barns when a horse from the stable of leading trainer Bill White tested positive for the equine herpesvirus. That horse was subsequently euthanized.

Track veterinarian Michelle Jobert said the Suckie horse was not walking properly, but it had no fever and was up to date on all vaccinations.

"Naturally we are taking every precaution possible under the circumstance, so we have quarantined Barn 78 until test samples from the sick horse, which were shipped to the University of Kentucky in Lexington today, can be examined," Jobert said Thursday.

Jobert said results from those tests are expected back on Saturday.

That is not good, for both CRC and TAM.

It's time to enact some emergency legislation and have Tropical Park at Calder at Hialeah meet
