Dunkelberger Ties Record for Consecutive Wins

Dunkelberger Ties Record for Consecutive Wins

(Charles Town, WV) – With his win aboard Citigambler in today’s 3rd race at Charles Town, jockey Travis Dunkelberger equaled the North American record for consecutive wins by a jockey with 9. The record was established by Albert Adams in 1930 and equaled in 1993 by Anthony Black.

Dunkelberger has reeled off the nine consecutive wins at both Charles Town and Laurel, since his mount, Quite Sassy, finished last in the 5th race at Laurel on November 11th. Dunkelberger attempted to break the record today aboard Warm Springs Girl in Race 7 at Charles Town but finished 2nd to end the skien.

Maybe for Marty's sake we can get Travis to give Ramon a few pointers.

3kings 11-15-2009 05:18 PM

You would think he would get more mounts.

Coach Pants 11-15-2009 07:21 PM

Maybe he'll make the move to Mediocre Downs now.

He's very selective with his mounts.

He and his agent are more concerned with riding horses with real chances to win (as evidenced by the very low odds of all the horses he won on) and having a higher win percentage. He splits time between Laurel and Charles Town and as his one-time personal chauffeur I'll say that it's not a particularly fun drive to make if all you're hoping for is the mount fee.

Is there an Eclipse for highest winning % for a stunningly mediocre jock?

slotdirt 11-16-2009 08:24 AM

Go bet a race with Dunkelberger on it at CT. He's virtually always on the favorite, so yeah, he's pretty darn selective with the horses he rides.

docicu3 11-16-2009 09:09 AM

It wasn't that long ago that people were posting asking where he was after an injury? Good for him he has figured out how to be relevant in night time east coast racing again. All the good jocks have to start somewhere before riding the big circuits. He's not a kid but he wouldn't be the first jockey to come out of WV/MD/Del to go on to doing better things in New York or So Cal.

randallscott35 11-16-2009 09:15 AM

A lot harder to do at tracks without nags.

slotdirt 11-16-2009 09:29 AM

Is there really a track going these days that is completely devoid of nags? I think not. Plus, CT gets some pretty salty customers in most of the races Travis is riding. You rarely see him on the 5k/4500 claimers if ever.

i get it, but i don't get it. Selective yeah thats fine, but i guess he makes a solid living being so selective? i rarely see him ride anymore, and i remember him bursting on the scene in like '95 when i was in high school, and he's still on the MD/WV circuit still just taking a lot less mounts, granted on horses who have a solid shot at winning. Not a doubt in my mind he would be leading rider at CT if he took regular mounts, with his connections and skills he would clean that place up like in the old days

I remember Eddie Castro winning 9 races one day at Crc. I guess he had more than 9 mounts?

His earnings are down this year, but usually he makes a decent living - probably a few hundred K.

He did well in NY earlier in his career and then had some problems. . . he has kids and family now in WVA, so I doubt he's going anywhere and I'm not sure he's too ambitious at this point.

Gander 11-16-2009 10:15 AM

He would get his clock cleaned at Aqueduct. Better off staying there in WV. Big fish in a very small pond as opposed to being a guppy in NY.

Do the same people who think that a one-turn mile is a sprint think that 7 furlongs at CT is a route?

Funny. But I dont remember making that statement, more so asking the question seeing how one mile races have been used in arguing for certain horses getting the sprint award, ex Aldeberran in 2003.

slotdirt 11-16-2009 10:30 AM

I'd bet dollars to doughnuts that Dunkelberger would do just fine at more major circuits if he ever craved the opportunity.

Sorry if my post seemed directed toward you...it wasn't meant to be. I was just throwing it out there.

Hell, anything is possible if you get in with the right people. Chavez won JOY once and Fires is in the HOF.

Cool. I know one mile isnt a sprint, but take a horse like Kodiak Kowboy who has already won 3 races this year (2 of them Grade Ones over the great Fabulous Strike). Say he wins the Cigar Mile. Does that even count towards his consideration of champion sprinter? Or is that a complete throwout race because of the distance?

If you are of the opinion that Informed Decision does not deserve the award because she never took on males, doesnt it kind of come down to who wins another race (and what race it is) between Fabulous Strike and the Kowboy?
