Meet Drake.

He is a retired greyhound. He raced 31 times at Raynham / Tauton winning 3 times during 2007 and then in 2008 raced 12 times at Birmingham Racecourse winning once.

Congrats Bill! I adopted a retired greyhound 6 years ago and he has been a wonderful addition to the family.

I have very few real goals in life lol, but adopting a greyhound has been one for about ten years now.

Someday.

Great news for Drake.

I have a retired race horse, very rewarding.

Have a fun time with him. Do not forget Dog is God spelled backwards. Dogs like you no matter what!!

Is my new dog faster than my Horse?

First of thanks for all of your kind words. Drake is adjustuing well to living in a house and being pampered. He is learning to go up and down stairsa nd has almost mastered. He is also getting the hang of not doing "his business" in the house (fingers crossed).

I looked up his race record and it got me thinking who was faster him or my horse. So I did the follwoing quick calculations and was shocked to see that he was faster than my horse. Is that possible?

Furlongs Yards Feet TimeFeet / SecondMPH 550 1,650 31.0853.0936.208.5 1,870 5,610 108.851.5635.16

Granted the her one win was on a soft turf course in April of this year but she did earn a beyer of 64.

I was floored by this did I mess up the calculation?

NGA-bred Greyhounds can certainly run 35mph, and the best can get to 38mph or so, but for a limited distance. They are sprinters. They generally can't hold that type of speed over more than 600-700 yards. It also depends upon how you measure their speed (on a banked track versus natural ground). By contrast, my Borzoi can get up to 32-35 mph, but outlast a grey. Saluki can outlast everything. Whippets - short sprinters.

They are all cool. Great personalities, very intelligent. I think the look is definitely an acquired taste, though. But the athletic ability reminds me of TB horses. Nothing more impressive than watching good dogs course.

With speed like that, Drake is sure to end up on King Glorious's Kentucky Derby watch list this year.

A track has just(?) closed in Wisconsin. If you want to save a race-dog now is a good time.
