If it is indeed Creme Fraiche in 2nd I'm going with this photo being taken at the Jersey Derby and the 3rd place horse is El Basco.

thanks guys! i remember all the hubbub about him skipping the preakness and belmont in favor of going for the bonus with the jersey derby. i believe his owner had a half or full brother to spend a buck that they named make buck..but i don't think he ever did!

The thing I remember the most about that race was the display of strength and power that Laffit Pincay, Jr. put on that day. It just felt like he picked Spend A Buck up and carried him under the wire. In that perspective, it was one of the greatest rides I ever saw.

A $2M pot.....and it was a pick-up ride no less!

Great, great race! Thanks so much for the picture!

Your welcome.

And Diaz wouldn't hold up the race for 20 minutes or move the race on the card (ABC had no issues with either since the Celtics/Laker game was scheduled earlier in the day) so Angel could coptor over from Belmont where he was committed to Track Barron in the Met Mile, and then wouldn't even offer up part of the bonus to him!

No kidding? I know that Angel tried very hard to get released from his commitment to Track Barron that day and was refused. He would have been there if he'd had a choice.

But I never heard that part about Dennis Diaz actually blocking any chance he had to get there to ride the horse, and if Diaz wouldn't even throw a piece of the bonus Angel's way after all he had done for him.......well, what was up with that?!

Spend A Buck was one of those brilliant champions that just get forgotten over the years. He was basically given up on at stud quite quickly and sent to Brazil, so he was out of sight out of mind. He sent us a gift from down there though. His name is Einstein.

Spend A Buck made a fan of me in that Jersey Derby. He was a good boy.
