Joe Woodard

These are some pretty impressive numbers that he is racking up pretty quietly:

TP: 56 19-9-11 0.34

2009: 421 132 0.31

Cannon Shell 10-06-2009 12:23 PM

He and his owner buy horses and cut them in half and race them at the bottom levels. The vast majority of his wins are at cheap tracks like River and Turfway (which sadly is now at the cheap track level). While the numbers at a glance may look impressive if you looked at the quality of races won it is not only not suspicious it is not really impressive.

citycat 10-06-2009 12:25 PM

Insinuating? I put up his stats that you do not hear much about his success when you watch TVG or HRTV. Granted he is running at much lower profile tracks but still wins alot.

If John Hancock finds a rich owner and does this then I'm quitting the game.

Agree- Hays has money to burn and just wants to win races, he doesn't care about money or where they win. My friend used to help them find horses to claim. Woodard really doesn't do much, just drop horses in the entry box. He definitely is not a cheater.

Cannon Shell 10-06-2009 12:48 PM

He has 68 starts with 28 wins at Beulah $101000k in earnings
He has 90 starts with 28 wins at River Downs with $135000k in earnings
He was 56 starts with 19 wins at Turfway with $157000 in earnings
He other winners were at TP in the Winter/Spring, Pinnacle, Mountaineer, Thistledowns, Ellis, Indiana Downs and 5 at Churchill

Uh claiming price. Or they buy maidens from the big tracks and ship them to River Downs. It is really easy to win if you are perfectly willing to lose tons of money. Buy a horse running 5 or 6th in maiden 30k at a big track for 15k, ship them to River and run in a MSW for a 6k pot. Win the race and run back in a 10 nw2 with a 5k purse. Win that one and run in a 10 nw3 with a 5.5k purse. Win that one and you may have run out of easy wins. You have spent 20k in purchase price, shipping, vet and training and won maybe 8k after paying the trainer and jockey. Now you have a horse who may not be worth 5k any more and a 12k loss. But you have 3 win pics and a nice %.

Maybe he has started feeding his horses.

2006; 28 wins from 179 starts= 15% 1.08 roi 527k earnings

2007; 24 wins from 176 starts= 13% 1.00 roi 325k earnings

2008; 45 wins from 250 starts= 18% 1.95 roi 433k earnings
many of these wins came from the bush track in Detroit...Pinnacle Downs.

2009; 132 wins from 421 starts= 31% 1.91 roi 976k earnings

My business partner/next door neighbor and I claimed a horse off Mr. Woodard in Nov.2007. He was the most uncared for horse you ever saw at the track. TWP made the track blacksmith put 2 new shoes on him in the paddock. He gained 200lbs in 3-4 months after the claim and turned into a petty decent horse.

He is GREAT to claim off of, note my "he doesn't do much with them" comment (a nice way of saying he's a terrible trainer despite this year's success.)

Lets just say he is no Woody Stephens.

I have heard some pretty crazy stuff about him...like breezing horses a half mile forgetting that they are entered that very day. To things like going long periods of time without going to the barn.

Accurate statement... the person you heard this from did most of the work around the barn for a period of time when Woodard went on an extended bender.

JW is the king of getting a solid 30k horse 5k starter eligible and winning a ton of races with them.
Funky Pirate would have been a stakes horse with any competent trainer.

Didn't Cannon Shell have Funky Pirate early in his career (the horse, not Cannon)? Sounds like a Stella Thayer name.

Right here in my soon to be former backyard and yes. All any person has to do is buy a DRF and look.
