Well, I guess he likes the turf okay.

sumitas 08-12-2006 06:05 PM

Although he ran faster than The Tin Man, I don't think he would have had much shot of beating him. It was impossible for The Tin Man to run his final time as fast as Showing Up becuase his fractions were simply too slow. He ran 6 furlongs in 1:15 as compared to 1:11 for Showing Up. The Tin Man would have had to come home in :21 2/5 to match Showing Up's final time.

It's interesting how different the two races were run. There was a reasonable pace in the Secretariat and SU came home in :24 2/5. There was a crawling pace in the Million and The Tin Man came home in :22 3/5.

Yeah I agree. People forget in long grass races that once three quarters has been run in a very slow time that its almost impossible for anyone to earn a huge fig because there is no way to come home fast enough to earn one.

I agree, I was just pointing out something I saw, which should make SU's figure pretty gaudy..

Showing Up is the best 3yr old turf horse. There is no argument. He also proved he is good enough to compete with the older horses. There is no argument there either. Bet against him at your own risk. All the horse does is win. I can't wait till he gets back to his stall at belmont. What a nice horse.

He impressed me certainly. The first time he faces older it will be a very interesting betting race. As for him and The Tin Man, If Showing Up had been in the Million I doubt if either of them would have won it because they would have been hammering away at each other in the opening 6f.
My question about the Seretariat is, what happened to Go Between? Did he bounce off of his performance in the VA Derby? I had a tri-box with him SU and Primary. Primary ran pretty well and Go Between seemed to get his normal trip, but then he just fell apart turning for home. I thought Mott would have him ready.

It looked like Go Between was hurt the way he suddenly stopped.

if a horse is running along ok and then suddenly stops, it sounds more than anything like a breathing problem...any word if he entrapped?

There is no argument?

Oh, OK ... but you will let us know when we can disagree ... won't you?

Showing Up is the most accomplished 3YO turf horse so far ... but whether or not he is the "best" ... remains to be seen. Some people may argue ... gasp! argue? dare they? ... that After Market is more talented than Showing Up ... and will prove to be the better of the two by year's end.

But ... then again ... we've been told that there is no argument.

The two races ... the Million and the Secretariat ... were about as different as races can be.

The Tin Man just loped along for 6f ... then sprinted the last half in :46 flat.

Showing Up ran a more even pace throughout ... and came home in :49.1.

Both races ... in their own way ... were very impressive ... as the horses did exactly what their jockeys wanted them to.

There are almost as many ways to win a race ... as there are to lose ... and these two fine performances really demonstrated that.

Coming from you this is comical. When they asked Cornelio, the jockey of both, he said Showing Up is a superhorse and After Market is a nice horse but lacks the explosiveness and class of Showing Up. After Market is targeting a 4yr old season. He is likely to never face older horses this year. Just one race back After Market nearly took out the entire field. Maybe next year.

What's comical is ... that you aren't aware of the most established truism in thoroughbred racing ... namely ...

... that the best place to clean up as a bookie ... is in the jockey's quarters.

Yup ... Cornelio Velazquez (!) is the supreme authority on thoroughbred quality. Now that's funny!
